Twitter A male suspect in Los Angeles fell or jumped to his death off of a crane after leading police on a pursuit in a stolen vehicle.

A bizarre police pursuit in Los Angeles had a deadly ending Wednesday night.

A male suspect who allegedly stole a vehicle and led police on a pursuit around the Port of Los Angeles climbed to the top of a container crane, stripped naked and reportedly fell to his death.

The man was atop the crane for several hours while authorities negotiated with him to come down safely. Some time through the ordeal, the man either fell or jumped off of the 17-story crane and plummeted about 150 feet to his death.

The incident started when the unidentified man allegedly stole a vehicle at a dealership at around 6 p.m. in San Bernardino. After doing so, he led police on a wild car chase through the Long Beach area and eventually came to a stop at the Port of Los Angeles. After speeding through a secure area in the China Shipping Yard, the suspect climbed a crane and had a standoff with police which lasted about three hours.

Port worker Liz Guardado-Nicosia told CBS L.A. that authorities cordoned off portions of the port and told employees to stay put as they dealt with the man.

“Someone just text me saying that there was a car chase and he’s in the China terminal, so she did the right thing and told me to stay in place,” Liz Guardado-Nicosia told the news outlet. “There’s stairs that go up the crane, to the cab, where the operator is, and so this criminal was climbing up the stairs, and then somehow the operator, they got word to the operator to come back down.”

The man ended up stripping naked around 8 p.m. local time and walked dangerously on the narrow crane as police tried to get him down, CBS L.A. reported,

News helicopters captured the scary ordeal as the man was seen sitting, walking around, waving and doing exercises all while nude as police tried to negotiate with him. Eventually, a Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team climbed the crane and approached the man and tried to get him down safely.

However, police scanner traffic indicated that at around 9:30 p.m., the man either fell or jumped to his death after landing on top a shipping container.

Police haven’t yet provided additional details in the matter, including the identity of the man.
