UFC superstar Jorge Masvidal spoke publicly about Colby Covington for the first time since his March 2022 arrest.
Masvidal was featured on the April 19 episode of Logan Paul’s “Impaulsive” podcast. It was his first interview since he was arrested following an altercation between him and Covington at Papi Steak in Miami Beach, Florida.
Masvidal was arrested March 21 and charged with two felonies after Covington accused “Gamebred” of attacking him out of nowhere, punching him twice in the face, which led to “Chaos” suffering a fractured tooth and injured wrist. Covington also claimed his Rolex was damaged by Masvidal, according to the arrest affidavit.
Masvidal entered a written plea of not guilty on April 7 and is scheduled to appear in court on April 21, according to court records.
During the “Impaulsive” podcast, Masvidal was asked for his thoughts on the viral Oscar moment between Will Smith and Chris Rock. Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife’s hair loss, and the actor walked on stage and slapped the comedian.
With obvious parallels between the Smith/Rock situation and the alleged incident between Masvidal and Covington — which came just two weeks after Covington brought up his opponent’s family in the lead-up to UFC 272 — the podcast hosts wanted to know whether or not Masvidal thought Smith’s slap was warranted.
Gamebred didn’t give his take. Instead, he invoked the fifth amendment.
“[Because] of some current situation, I’m going to plead the fifth right now,” Masvidal laughed.
Paul pressed Masvidal a bit, asking: “What kind of current situations?”
“Ah, some situation I won’t even mention right now,” Masvidal answered.
Masvidal Was ‘F****** Irrate’ After UFC 272 Loss to Covington
Masvidal did talk about his loss to Covington, however. The two competed at UFC 272 last month and Chaos utilized his wrestling to control Masvidal for large portions of the five-round affair, earning him the win via unanimous decision.
“I was f****** irrate,” Masvidal said during the podcast when asked how he felt after the fight. “I was upset. And I just like to be in isolation when I get like that. It’s just better for me. Take a couple days to figure it out.”
Gamebred said he came up with a plan during those days. The 37-year-old knows he needs to work on his wrestling above anything else, and he’s going to enlist friends from Penn State to help him with it, he said.
Masvidal said during the interview that he didn’t have a comeback opponent in mind and that he plans on competing for at least two to three more years.
Gamebred Says He’d Never Bring Up Family While Talking Trash
Masvidal was asked for his general thoughts on trash-talking, and about what crosses the line. During the lead-up to their UFC 272 war, Covington repeatedly brought up Gamebred’s family, something Masvidal said is out of bounds.
“Lines that you just don’t cross is I don’t care how much I dislike any of you,” Masvidal said, according to LowKickMMA.com. “I’m not gonna talk about your moms, your kids, I don’t care about your significant other. For my problems with you, then you, I come at.
“I definitely think there has to be lines drawn because if not, it’ll just keep going and going.”
Masvidal Says He ‘Wrestled Like S***’ Against Covington
During the UFC 272 post-fight press conference, Gamebred shared his thoughts on the fight, and specifically the wrestling aspect.
Masvidal felt like the superior fighter on the feet, but the issue was he couldn’t keep the contest on the feet.
“I wrestled like s***,” Masvidal said after the fight. “That first takedown I gave up, he took my back, he rode me pretty good.
“I felt like on the feet I definitely did more damage. I didn’t pounce after I dropped him [in the fourth round]. I thought he was gonna shoot [for a takedown], I was thinking of the wrong s***. That was my chance right there, to make a sprint and maybe make it a 10-8 or 10-7 round.
“He’s a b****. The b**** can wrestle, though.”
