Frayser Riot Video: Man Hits Police Squad Car With Chair

Frayser riots erupted after a large crowd gathered on the scene of a reported officer-involved shooting in Memphis.

Officials said the shooting occurred in the 2000 block of Durham in Memphis just before 7 p.m. local time. It involved the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, a U.S. Marshal Service. Officials have not released any details on the shooting. The man who was shot was identified as Brandon Webber.

A local reporter, Luke Jones with WREG-TV, captured a video of a man smashing a squad car with a chair.

The video appears to show a man dressed in all white smashing a Memphis Police Department car with a chair. Another man shouts profanities in the background. He hits the rear of the car twice with a chair, then passes the chair to a second man, who smashed the rear windshield of the car. The second man hit the rear windshield three times. The video captures the sound of glass shattering. At least one other person also appeared to be recording a video of the incident.

Officials said Memphis Police Officers were not involved in the shooting.

Several officers and at least two reporters suffered minor injuries on the scene.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released a statement, that did not identify Webber, saying U.S. Marshals were serving warrants on a man who rammed his vehicle into the officers’ vehicles before exiting with a weapon.

“Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 7 p.m., multiple officers with the United States Marshals Service – Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force encountered a male, wanted on multiple warrants, outside of a home in the 2700 block of Durham Street as he was getting into a vehicle. While attempting to stop the individual, he reportedly rammed his vehicle into the officers’ vehicles multiple times before exiting with a weapon. The officers fired striking and killing the individual. No officers were injured,” the statement said.
