In a speech in San Diego on Thursday, just days before the California primary, Hillary Clinton showed a new direction in her campaign by focusing just on Donald Trump and his foreign policy ideas. The former Secretary of State said that Trump is “temperamentally unfit to hold an office that requires knowledge, stability and immense responsibility.”
Clinton framed a potential Trump presidency as a danger to the U.S.’ security, suggesting that he could start another war just because someone gets “under his very thin skin.”
In the speech, Clinton went after specific Trump comments, including his March comments to the New York Times that more countries should have nuclear weapons. She also reminded the audience that Trump once said, “I know more about ISIS than the generals do, believe me.” She recalled that time Trump said John McCain isn’t a war hero. Clinton said that the U.S. had to stand by its allies.
She continued:
Now imagine Donald Trump sitting in the Situation Room, making life-or-death decisions on behalf of the United States. Imagine him deciding whether to send your spouses or children into battle. Imagine if he had not just his Twitter account at his disposal when he’s angry, but America’s entire arsenal.
Do we want him making those calls – someone thin-skinned and quick to anger, who lashes out at the smallest criticism? Do we want his finger anywhere near the button?
I have a lot of faith that the American people will make the right decision. This is a country with a deep reservoir of common sense and national pride. We’re all counting on that.
For his part, Trump took to Twitter to attack Clinton, who he always refers to as “Crooked Hillary.” “In Crooked Hillary’s telepromter speech yesterday, she made up things that I said or believe but have no basis in fact. Not honest!” he wrote this morning. In another tweet, he called it a “bad performance” and said she “no longer has credibility – too much failure in office.”
