There has been no shortage of delegate talk in the Democratic race for the nomination. The AP reported Monday that Hillary Clinton had reached the 2,383 delegates needed to secure the nomination.

The report came out prior to six states conducting June 7 primaries. The report does include superdelegates as the AP cited the superdelegates they spoke with will not switch their support to Bernie Sanders at the convention.

Sanders released a statement disputing the AP’s report.

It is unfortunate that the media, in a rush to judgment, are ignoring the Democratic National Committee’s clear statement that it is wrong to count the votes of superdelegates before they actually vote at the convention this summer.

Secretary Clinton does not have and will not have the requisite number of pledged delegates to secure the nomination. She will be dependent on superdelegates who do not vote until July 25 and who can change their minds between now and then. They include more than 400 superdelegates who endorsed Secretary Clinton 10 months before the first caucuses and primaries and long before any other candidate was in the race,” Sanders said in the statement.

While the timing of the report in interesting, Sanders finds himself on the ropes on the last major primary date. The Sanders campaign has been eyeing California for several months. After trailing early on by double-digits, the latest early polls show Clinton with just a two percentage point lead on Sanders in California.

The challenge for Sanders, even with a California victory, is the delegates get allocated proportionally based on the results. Unless he is able to pull off a win by a wide margin, the 475 delegates will likely be close to an even split.

Heading into the June 7 primaries, Clinton has an estimated lead of 285 delegates. Sanders will need a big June 7 primary day to enhance his strategy of looking towards a contested convention.
