On January 27, President Donald Trump held his first joint press conference with a foreign leader. He will be speaking with U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May at the East Room of the White House. The press conference started at 1:00 p.m. ET. It did not last beyond 40 minutes, because he was scheduled to have a luncheon with May at 1:40 p.m. ET.
May arrived in the U.S. earlier this week to speak before Republican Congressional leaders in Philadelphia on January 27. Her speech had praise for Trump, but also said that they must pull back from the “failed polices of the past” in their relationship.
“The days of Britain and America intervening in sovereign countries in an attempt to remake the world in our own image are over. But nor can we afford to stand idly by when the threat is real and when it is in our own interests to intervene,” May said.
May’s speech also included congratulatory remarks for Republicans, telling that that, since they won in November, “America can be stronger, greater, and more confident in the years ahead. And a newly emboldened, confident America is good for the world.”
However, May stressed the importance of international organizations, including the UN, the World Bank and NATO. May acknowledged that they do need to be reformed, but they still have important roles in global politics.
“Some of these organizations are in need of reform and renewal to make them relevant to our needs today,” May said in Philadelphia. “But we should be proud of the role our two nations — working in partnership — played in bringing them into being, and in bringing peace and prosperity to billions of people as a result.”
