Memphis Police are assisting in investigating a shooting involving U.S. Marshals, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
A marshal’s service was serving “violent charges” on a suspect who “pulled a rifle” on a marshal, according to Janice Broach with WMC-TV. She reported at least one marshal “fired back.” He was identified as Brandon Webber.
The shooting occurred in the 2000 block of Durham in Memphis and involved the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, a U.S. Marshal Service, at about 7 p.m. local time, officials said. Officials have not released any details on the shooting.
Local reporters on the scene described an “intense” scene involving a large crowd and reported hearing gunfire. At least two reporters also suffered minor injuries.
Several officers suffered minor injuries from people throwing rocks or bricks at them, according to Memphis Police Department.
A local reporter, Luke Jones with WREG-TV said police confirmed the shooting on the scene in Frayser and tweeted a photo.
Memphis Police Department officers at the Old Allen Station were called to assist with traffic control. They were not involved in the shooting, according to WREG.
Jones said the officers “created a human wall” on Overton Crossing. He described the scene as “very unusual.”
One reporter said he was knocked to the ground by a person who hit him on the head.
Rebecca Butcher with Local 24 News tweeted a brief video of the police presence on the scene.
She later said people were throwing rocks at the officers. Police in riot gear said “hold your line” as rocks were thrown at them, she said.
She said her photographer was hit by someone in the crowd.
She shared a video of a man confronting a row of officers with riot shields up.
Joyce Peterson with WMCA-TV tweeted the scene was “deteriorating quickly” and reported a store nearby was being looted. “Officers advised there could be retaliation from the community because of the shooting that occurred,” she wrote.
She later tweeted a video that appeared to capture the sound of gunfire.
Police were requesting tear gas. Officials asked to prepare jail space, Peterson said.
Jones tweeted “Just saw 2 guys smash a police car with a chair” along with a video. Note the video contains profanity.
A few people in a crowd were throwing things at officers, he tweeted, along with another video.
He reported he heard “something being fired” which sent the crowd running briefly.
Katina Rankin with Local 24 News described the scene as “intense,” sharing a video of officers with riot shields backing up.
Another video appeared to show objects being hurled at the group of officers.
Jones said officers were telling the crowd to disperse over loudspeakers.
A dispatch on the scanner asked any injured officers to report to a specific location. Scanner chatter also indicated about 12 shots were fired araound 9:30 p.m. “unknown if at officers or not.” Dispatchers repeatedly asked first responders to “use extreme caution.” An officer reported on the scanner someone threw a rock at a police car.
Peterson tweeted a picture of a damaged police car.
Kelli Clark with WMCA-TV said she saw two officers who appeared to be helping an injured officer.
She later said the officer was injured by a bottle.
