Gibbs appears positioned to inherit an increased backfield role, as David Montgomery (knee) is out indefinitely due to a potentially significant MCL injury sustained during Sunday's 48-42 loss to the Bills, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Gibbs piled up 114 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's loss to Buffalo, a contest in which Detroit was forced to play from behind and adopt a pass-heavy approach. Montgomery's MCL injury seems to have also factored into Gibbs' increased role, rather than the two operating in a fairly even timeshare, as per usual. Now, with Montgomery potentially in danger of missing the remainder of the 2024 campaign, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Gibbs seems to be facing a clear path to workhorse opportunities down the stretch, making him matchup-proof. Gibbs hasn't required a hefty workload in order to produce this season, but with Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki now positioned as his top complementary options, he seems positioned as the Lions' clear backfield leader heading into a road matchup against the Bears in Week 16.

Workhorse role coming?
Pair of scores in loss
Gibbs rushed the ball eight times for 31 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 48-42 loss to the Bills. He added five receptions on seven targets for 83 yards and an additional score. The Lions attempted only 15 rushes in the game, as they were forced into a pass-heavy offensive scheme while chasing points. That led to a modest day on the ground for Gibbs, though he did punch in a one-yard rushing score midway through the fourth quarter. He also shone as a pass-catcher, with all five of his receptions going for gains of at least 10 yards, highlighted by a 12-yard touchdown grab early in the final quarter. All told, it was Gibbs' second consecutive multi-touchdown performance and the eighth time he's topped 100 yards from scrimmage for the season.
Scores receiving TD in win
Gibbs rushed 15 times for 43 yards and secured all six targets for 30 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' 34-31 win over the Packers on Thursday night. Gibbs and backfield mate David Montgomery struggled to find consistent running room, and 20 of Gibbs' rushing yards actually came on one carry. However, the second-year back tied Tim Patrick for the lead in receptions and recorded his second receiving touchdown of the season on a two-yard catch just before halftime. Gibbs now has four total touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) over the last four games heading into a Week 15 home clash against the Bills on Sunday night, Dec. 15.
Garners 11 touches Thursday
Gibbs rushed nine times for 87 yards while catching two of four targets 17 yards in Thursday's 23-20 win over the Bears. He also lost a fumble. Gibbs' efficient performance on the ground raised his season average to 6.0 yards per carry, but his first catch of the game resulted in a fumble on Chicago's six-yard line. He finished with 12 fewer rushing attempts than David Montgomery (shoulder) but was only one rushing yard behind Montgomery's team-leading total, and neither found the end zone after scoring 11 times apiece in Detroit's first 11 games. Gibbs and Montgomery should continue to platoon against the Packers next Thursday in Week 14.
Takes over in second half
Gibbs rushed 21 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns while bringing in all three of his targets for nine receiving yards in Sunday's 24-6 win over the Colts. Detroit's talented backfield featured both co-starters scoring touchdowns in the first half of Sunday's win. Gibbs was afforded extra opportunities and a second score after David Montgomery (shoulder) exited the contest in the third quarter. The 22-year-old Gibbs is now up to 10 rushing touchdowns through 11 games this season, matching the entire total from his 15-game rookie campaign. If Montgomery's injury forces him to miss the Lions' next contest, Gibbs would become the primary back in a tasty matchup against the Bears on Thanksgiving Day.
Rushing TD in efficient performance
Gibbs rushed 11 times for 69 yards and a touchdown and brought in his only target for a 54-yard catch in the Lions' 52-6 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. Gibbs logged four fewer carries than backfield mate David Montgomery but gained just six less yards, and he finished third on the Lions in receiving yards thanks to a career-long 54-yard reception. Gibbs also recorded his fifth rushing touchdown in the last five games on a one-yard run early in the second quarter, making it yet another rewarding fantasy afternoon for the explosive second-year back. Gibbs next takes aim at a vulnerable Colts defense in a Week 12 road matchup next Sunday.
Cracks century mark on 21 touches
Gibbs rushed 19 times for 71 yards while catching two of three targets for 37 yards in Sunday's 26-23 win over the Texans. Gibbs was the only position player for either side to crack 100 total yards from scrimmage in an odd game that featured seven combined interceptions. Co-starter David Montgomery struggled on the ground (12-32-1) but was also the beneficiary of Detroit's lone rushing touchdown on the night. Both tailbacks should be considered universal starts in all fantasy formats heading into a soft matchup against the Jaguars next Sunday.
Tallies eighth touchdown
Gibbs rushed the ball 11 times for 65 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 24-14 win over the Packers. He added one reception on two targets for 11 yards. David Montgomery was the favored option in the Detroit backfield in rainy conditions and a positive game script. However, Gibbs had the better fantasy performance thanks to his performance on the team's first possession of the second half when he tallied an 18-yard rush before finding the end zone from 15 yards away. Gibbs now has eight total touchdowns and has scored in three consecutive games.
Pops long touchdown
Gibbs rushed the ball 11 times for 127 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 52-14 win over the Titans. He added one reception on one target for six yards. The Lions had limited volume offensively as their defense and special teams set them up with short fields throughout the day. That led to muted efforts from most of the team's skill-position players, though Gibbs managed to break free for a 70-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter when he burst through the line and raced down the sideline while barely being touched. He has now topped 100 rushing yards in consecutive games and has accumulated over 100 total yards in four of seven contests.
