Panthers coach Dave Canales said Friday that Young will be the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the season, Alex Zietlow of The Charlotte Observer reports. Young has played much better since retaking the starting role in November, but he's coming off a four-turnover performance in a 30-14 loss to Dallas. The Panthers apparently will continue starting him for the final three games even if he struggles, with an injury perhaps being the exception that would get Andy Dalton back on the field. Carolina hosts Arizona this Sunday.

Locked in as starter down the stretch
Panthers coach Dave Canales said Friday that Young will be the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the season, Alex Zietlow of The Charlotte Observer reports. Young has played much better since retaking the starting role in November, but he's coming off a four-turnover performance in a 30-14 loss to Dallas. The Panthers apparently will continue starting him for the final three games even if he struggles, with an injury perhaps being the exception that would get Andy Dalton back on the field. Carolina hosts Arizona this Sunday.
Four turnovers in loss
Young completed 19 of 28 passes for 219 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's 30-14 loss to the Cowboys. He added three rushes for 12 yards and an additional score. Young had turned the ball over only four times in six games since retaking the starting role entering Sunday's game, but he struggled to take care of the ball in Carolina's blowout loss with two picks and two lost fumbles. Those turnovers led directly to 10 points for Dallas. Young's day was also underwhelming in terms of his ability to move the offense, as a significant amount of his yardage came on an 83-yard touchdown toss to Jalen Coker. After showing signs of being a competent NFL starter, Young took a step back in the loss and now has only one passing touchdown in six straight games.
Struggles in Sunday's loss
Young completed 19 of 34 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Sunday's 22-16 loss to the Eagles. He also gained 29 rushing yards on seven carries. While the second-year QB had some big moments late as the Panthers tried to pull off the upset, Young's inexperience also showed at times -- on Carolina's final drive, he got flagged for an illegal forward pass deep in his own end when he scrambled across the line of scrimmage before getting rid of the ball. The interception was Young's first turnover since Week 9, and he's thrown at least one TD in six straight straight games since regaining the starting job. He gets a much friendlier matchup on paper in Week 15 against the Cowboys.
Another effective performance
Young completed 26 of 46 passes for 298 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in Sunday's 26-23 overtime loss to the Buccaneers. He added three rushes for 17 yards and an additional touchdown. Young primarily got to his impressive yardage total based on volume rather than efficiency, but he continues to lead a competent Panthers offense. He accounted for the team's first touchdown himself by scrambling for a 10-yard rush midway through the second quarter. Young also had strong moments as a passer, including a 25-yard touchdown strike to Adam Thielen in the second half in addition to an impressive drive that resulted in a field goal which began with only 43 seconds remaining in the first half, during which he went 5-for-8 for 49 yards. Perhaps most importantly, Young continued to limit mistakes by not turning the ball over for the third straight game while also taking only one sack.
Solid showing against KC
Young completed 21 of 35 passes for 263 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Chiefs. He added three rushes for 20 yards. The Panthers came away with only nine first-half points, but Young kept the offense moving in the first two quarters by completing 10 of 18 passes for 177 yards. He managed to break through for a touchdown on a one-yard pass to David Moore midway through the third quarter, and Young also managed four completions of at least 20 yards -- his highest mark in a game this season. The only shortcoming of his performance was a single touchdown pass, but this was almost certainly his best start of the campaign. His position as Carolina's starter in the short-term is also seemingly no longer in question, as coach Dave Canales said that Young will start in Week 13 against Tampa Bay, per David Newton of ESPN.com.
Remains starter after bye week
Panthers head coach Dave Canales confirmed that Young will remain the team's starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports. After a five-game benching earlier in the season, Young returned to the starting lineup Week 8, when Andy Dalton was unavailable after suffering a thumb injury in a car accident. Though Dalton was cleared to resume playing Week 9, Young proceeded to start in both of the Panthers' final two games prior to their Week 11 bye, guiding Carolina to wins over the Saints and Giants while completing 60.8 percent of his passes for 5.8 yards per attempt and a 2:1 TD:INT between those two victories. While his numbers since reclaiming the starting role aren't overly impressive, Young has still taken a step forward from his lowly production during his 2023 rookie campaign and the first two games of 2024. He'll remain a low-end fantasy option while he continues to start for Carolina, with his utility largely limited to leagues that start two quarterbacks or have a QB flex spot.
Modest numbers in OT victory
Young completed 15 of 25 passes for 126 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions while adding two rushes for 30 yards in the Panthers' 20-17 overtime win over the Giants in Munich on Sunday. Young once again carried out a very conservative game plan that saw him average a miniscule 5.0 yards per attempt, but the embattled second-year pro stayed away from any turnovers and mostly rode the coattails of Chuba Hubbard, who put together a career-best effort on the ground. Young hit rookie tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders from five yards out in the first quarter for his one touchdown pass, and the former has clearly shown improvement in his second go-around as the starting quarterback following a mostly disastrous start to his second campaign. Young heads into the Panthers' Week 11 bye with a 4:3 TD:INT over his current three-game tenure in the top job but will face a daunting Week 12 matchup at home against the Chiefs on Sunday, Nov. 24.
Named Week 10 starter
Young will start Sunday's game against the Giants in Munich, but Panthers had coach Dave Canales was unwilling to commit to the quarterback continuing to start beyond Week 10, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports. In other words, the Panthers are still viewing the quarterback position as a week-to-week situation, with Young perpetually a bad game or two away from turning the offense back over to veteran Andy Dalton. The 23-year-old will make his third consecutive start this Sunday, after pulling off a 23-22 win over the Saints in Week 9 to improve his career record as a starter to 3-17.
Likely getting another start
Young appears likely to start this Sunday against the Giants in Munich, David Newton of ESPN.com reports. The Panthers haven't yet named a starter, with general manager Dan Morgan deferring the decision to head coach Dave Canales. However, Newton suggests that "everything points toward Young starting his third straight game." Last year's No. 1 overall pick earned his third career win this past Sunday, albeit with a modest passing line (16-of-26 for 171 yards, one touchdown and one interception) in a 23-22 victory over the injury-riddled Saints. Andy Dalton was active for the contest as a backup, after missing the prior game due to a thumb sprain suffered in a car accident.
