Opening 2024 on PUP list
The Panthers placed Wonnum (quadriceps) on the reserve/PUP list Tuesday. Wonnum missed Weeks 17 and 18 with the Vikings last season and then signed a two-year deal in free agency with Carolina. Wonnum hasn't practiced at all since signing with the team and will now miss at least the first four games of the 2024 campaign. Wonnum recorded 8.0 sacks for Minnesota last season and has 23.0 for his career.
Starts on PUP list, as expected
The Panthers placed Wonnum (quadriceps) on the active/PUP list Friday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports. Wonnum is set to start training camp on the PUP list as he works to recover from the left quadriceps surgery he underwent in December. He can be activated at any time during camp or the preseason and figures to handle a starting role at at edge rusher across from Jadeveon Clowney once back to full health.
PUP bound?
Wonnum (quadriceps) could begin the summer on Carolina's PUP list, Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer reports. Wonnum agreed to a two-year deal with the Panthers earlier in the offseason, but he's still dealing with a quadriceps issue from last year that has kept him off the field thus far. Despite Wonnum potentially starting Carolina's summer on the PUP list, he's expected to contribute as one of the Panthers' starting edge rushers alongside Jadeveon Clowney "at some point," according to Kaye.
Still not recovered
Wonnum has been dealing with some complications from his quadriceps surgery this offseason, Joe Person of The Athletic reports. Wonnum underwent surgery in December to repair a torn quadriceps suffered last season, but he appears to still be on the mend. It's unclear how long he may remain sidelined and if he'll be ready for the start of training camp.
Still sidelined
Wonnum (quadriceps) is missing voluntary workouts Tuesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports. Wonnum is still on the mend after surgery to repair his quadriceps, which he injured during Week 16 of last season. The South Carolina product inked a deal with the Panthers in March, so although it seems the franchise is not worried about his injury, it's not clear yet when he'll be ready to participate in the team's offseason programs.
Inks deal with Carolina
The Panthers signed Wonnum (quadriceps) to a two-year deal Thursday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Wonnum was forced to miss the end of the Vikings' 2023 campaign due to a quadriceps injury, but it now seems as if he's moved past the issue. The 26-year-old edge rusher is coming off the most productive season of his career, appearing in 15 games and recording 62 total tackles, including 8.0 sacks, while also defending six passes. With the departure of Brian Burns this offseason, Wonnum has a chance to serve as the Panthers' top pass rusher in 2024.
Two sacks in win
With Marcus Davenport (ankle) on injured reserve, Wonnum started again at right edge rusher and played on 63 of the defense's 68 snaps. He has four sacks and 30 tackles in eight games this season.
