Matlock logged 11 snaps on offense, nine snaps on defense and 13 snaps on special teams in the Chargers' 17-15 loss to the Cardinals on Monday. The Chargers have been regularly using Matlock in all three phases of the game this season, with the 24-year-old seeing action as a fullback, defensive tackle and on special teams. He's recorded one reception for seven yards on two targets to go with two tackles and a pass breakup through six games.
Matlock is listed as the Chargers' starting fullback ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Raiders, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. A 2023 sixth-round draft pick, Matlock played exclusively along the defensive line as a rookie, but first-year Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh praised the 6-foot-4, 296-pound Matlock's conditioning. Harbaugh believes Matlock has the ability to play both ways, perhaps in a way similar to how the Ravens have deployed Patrick Ricard in past seasons. Matlock played 256 defensive snaps and 94 special-teams snaps last season, registering 15 tackles.
