Alvin Jones Sr., the father of Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones and NFL linebacker Alvin Jones Jr., died Tuesday at the age of 57, according to Instagram posts from both of the Jones twins.
A cause of death was not indicated in either of the brothers’ posts.
“Heart torn into a million pieces I’m so proud of you I love You Dad I promise I’ll always protect and take care of our Queen and the rest Family you’ve raise me and have been preparing vino and I for 26 years ! Alvin Sr. Never Missed Jones’ Packers Games
Alvin Sr. was a 29-year military veteran who retired from active duty in 2013 to spend more time with his kids and help support Aaron and Alvin Jr.’s passion for football. He never missed a home or away game during their collegiate careers at the University of Texas-El Paso and kept up the tradition when Jones joined the Packers, often captured on national TV broadcasts celebrating his son’s big plays or touchdowns.
For instance, here’s a shot of Alvin Sr. celebrating and showing off his son’s Packers jersey to nearby fans in Arrowhead Stadium during a 2019 Sunday Night Football broadcast. Jones had just hauled in a 67-yard touchdown reception — his second of the night — to give the Packers a 31-24 lead that they would never surrender.
Jones finished the night with a career-best 155 receiving yards and another 67 rushing yards, and Alvin Sr. was there for it, loving every minute.
Jones Wrote About Father in Players’ Tribune Piece
Jones has mentioned his father numerous times throughout his NFL career, especially after Alvin Sr.’s dedicated presence caught the attention of Packers fans and quickly became another thing to love about having the talented tailback in Green Bay. Nothing got as personal, though, as what he wrote for The Players’ Tribune last summer.
Jones’ piece — entitled“Two Fathers” — was published last July about two months after his son, Aaron Jones Jr., was born and during the summerlong protests against systemic racism and police brutality that followed in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Most of the post was centered around Alvin Sr. and the way he raised his children to be bigger people, but one passage, in particular, highlighted Jones’ appreciation for his father.
Here’s what Jones wrote about how Alvin Sr. taught him to deal with racism:
He always told me, when they’re just words, to be the bigger man.
And the truth for me is that I’ve had a bigger man to look up to all my life, setting the example, leading the way. My dad is the greatest man I’ve ever encountered. The things he’s done for me in my life — he’s been there every step of the way. He taught me everything. He taught me to keep God first — that with God, anything is possible. He taught me to believe in myself.
He showed me how a man’s supposed to be a man.
