WATCH: NYPD Officer Shoots Hammer-Wielding Man David Baril

Police say surveillance video (watch it above) shows a hammer-wielding man attacking a NYPD officer as she walked down the street in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday. The officer had recognized the man, 30-year-old David Baril, who was wanted in four previous attacks on random pedestrians with a hammer.

Baril was then shot twice by the officer’s partner, Officer Geraldo Casaigne, police said. Baril was critically injured. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said Casaigne possibly saved the life of his partner, Officer Lauren O’Rourke.

The officers were both also hospitalized to be evaluated.

Baril has a history of mental illness and had posted several homicidal and suicidal poems and rants on his social media pages. Read more about Baril by clicking the link below:
