In an interview with The Hill, Perino explained that her book was more about the lessons she learned while working at the White House than revealing gossip about her time there.

“I wanted to share advice through anecdotes and stories shared based on all of these amazing experiences I’ve been able to have so far, including serving in the White House and being able to travel the world and work for a president that I had long admired, that I didn’t know before the 9/11 attacks but that I continue to think of as a great president, a friend and in many ways, as you’ll read in the book, a second father to me,” Perino explained to The Hill. “I talk about growing up in the West and how those Western values contributed to my upbringing.”

Perino’s sequel, published in October, has a different subject. Let Me Yell You About Jasper…: How My Best Friend Became America’s Dog is about how dogs can bring families together when politics threaten to tear them apart. She also wrote about her relationship with Jasper, who has become a social media star.

“Jasper sat with me while I wrote the book,” Perino told Fox News colleague Greg Gutfeld. “He can squeeze into any chair and often I have to write at an angle to accommodate him. Jasper can’t read, but he knows things. And actually, my favorite chapter is written in Jasper’s voice. It’s called “A Day in the Life of Jasper” and it is, in a word, hilarious.”
