Hogberg is slated to patrol the crease on the road against Carolina on Sunday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Hogberg will take the second half of a back-to-back after Ilya Sorokin gets the starting nod on the road versus the Lightning on Saturday. Between his light workload and some poor performances, Hogberg hasn't won an NHL game since Jan. 18 versus the Sharks, going 0-1-1 in his four appearances since with a 2.73 GAA.
Sorokin will be between the visiting pipes in Tampa Bay on Saturday, per Andrew Gross of Newsday. Sorokin was pulled early in the third period Wednesday against the Canucks, giving up four goals on 19 shots. The 29-year-old has played 54 games this season, going 27-21-6 with three shutouts, a 2.76 GAA and a .905 save percentage. The Lightning tallied eight goals Thursday, giving them an average of 3.57 goals per game, second in the NHL.
Mayfield has played in just eight of 16 games since he returned from a lower-body injury Feb. 23. Mayfield has no points in that span, adding eight blocked shots, seven hits, five shots on net and a minus-1 rating. The Islanders have nine healthy defensemen on the roster, five of them being right-handed shots, including Mayfield. He can play on either side, but it's clear that he is not viewed as one of the team's six best blueliners at this time, and he doesn't have the same scoring appeal as Adam Boqvist to draw in as a seventh defenseman on occasion. Mayfield is at seven points, 45 shots on net, 78 hits, 95 blocked shots and a plus-13 rating over 58 outings this season.
DeAngelo scored a goal on four shots and blocked two shots in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Canucks. DeAngelo extended his point streak to four games (one goal, four assists). The 29-year-old's tally briefly gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead in the second period. He's been a good fit in a top-four role since joining the team in January, racking up three goals, 15 points, 48 shots on net, 32 blocked shots and a minus-2 rating over 24 appearances.
Cizikas scored a shorthanded goal and added an even-strength assist in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Canucks. His efforts briefly gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead midway through the second period, but the rest of the offense went cold. Cizikas snapped a nine-game point drought and an 11-game goal drought with the performance, and on the season he's produced six goals and 14 points in 71 appearances. While his 186 hits are two shy of his career high, his minus-15 rating would be a career worst.
Hogberg stopped all five shots he faced after replacing Ilya Sorokin early in the third period of Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Canucks. Coach Patrick Roy made the desperation switch in the crease after the Islanders fell behind 4-2, but the move didn't pay off. Hogberg has made three appearances (two starts) in nine games since coming off IR in early March, allowing seven goals on 67 shots while going 0-1-1. With New York leaning heavily on Sorokin while fighting for a playoff spot, Hogberg may not get many opportunities between the pipes over the final weeks of the season.
Fasching (illness) is expected to play Wednesday versus Vancouver, per Stefen Rosner of NHL.com. Fasching missed Monday's 4-3 shootout loss to Columbus due to the illness. He has two assists, 25 shots, 22 hits and 11 blocks over 31 outings in 2024-25. Fasching's return will likely result in the Islanders dressing 12 forwards instead of the 11 they utilized Monday, and Adam Boqvist is projected to be a healthy scratch as a result.
Sorokin will start at home against Vancouver on Saturday, per Stefen Rosner of NHL.com. Sorokin has a 27-20-6 record, 2.72 GAA and .907 save percentage in 53 outings this season. However, he's been better in March, posting a 6-2-2 record, 2.58 GAA and .915 save percentage across 10 appearances. The Canucks rank 23rd in the NHL with 2.79 goals per game.
