Alcantara (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Alcantara threw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last October and will toss another bullpen Saturday. The expectation remains that Alcantara won't pitch until 2025, but he's been progressing well.
Simpson (elbow) will throw a live bullpen Saturday with Single-A Jupiter, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Simpson has been cleared to face batters after completing a pair of bullpen sessions in the last week. While he threw 35 pitches in his previous bullpen, Simpson is expected to throw 25 in Saturday's session. He's ahead of schedule, with the initial expectation being that he required two more bullpens before facing hitters.
The Marlins optioned Munoz to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday. Munoz surrendered six runs in five innings during a start against the Orioles on Thursday and was removed from the active roster. Since being recalled June 8, Munoz logged a 5.76 ERA in 45.1 innings for Miami.
Meyer will be recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Saturday in Milwaukee, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. It had been reported previously that Meyer was rejoining the Marlins' rotation this weekend and now we have a confirmed date. The young right-hander has spent more than three months at Jacksonville even as the Marlins' rotation need became dire, but he will finally be unleashed again. Meyer was initially limited to 3-to-4 innings at a time after being sent down, but he was starting to get stretched out more in his last few starts with Jacksonville. De Nicola notes that while Miami will still be mindful of Meyer's workload down the stretch, there don't appear to be plans for a hard cap on his innings.
The Marlins will recall Meyer from Triple-A Jacksonville to rejoin their rotation this weekend in Milwaukee, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. Meyer last pitched with Jacksonville on July 20 and the Marlins have an opening in their rotation Saturday, so he'll be on plenty of rest for the start. The young right-hander was sent down back in April as a means to manage his workload, and he's pitched well of late, allowing just two runs with a 23:6 K:BB over 19 innings covering his last four Triple-A starts. Meyer has averaged 77.5 pitches in those outings, with a high of 86, and the Marlins will continue to keep a close eye on his workload down the stretch. Even with likely restrictions, Meyer is worthy of being scooped back up in fantasy leagues where he's available. He posted a 2.12 ERA and 14:3 K:BB over 17 frames in three starts for the Marlins earlier this season.
Edwards went 2-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and a stolen base in Thurday's extra-inning loss to the Orioles. Batting second against ace right-hander Corbin Burnes, Edwards delivered his ninth multi-hit performance in the last 15 games while stealing his fifth bag of the year. The 24-year-old shortstop is slashing a blistering .431/.500/.471 over that stretch with seven RBI, nine runs and a 9:7 BB:K, and the move to the top of the order is likely to stick as long as he keeps raking. If the trade rumors circling Jazz Chisholm pan out, Edwards seems likely to become the Marlins' leadoff hitter in August.
Brazoban is a candidate to step into the closer role for the Marlins in the event Tanner Scott gets traded, Kaushik Sampath of the Miami Herald reports. Andrew Nardi is viewed as the top option to replace Scott, especially with A.J. Puk having been shipped to the Diamondbacks, but Brazoban might also be a factor in the ninth inning. The right-hander missed the beginning of the season due to visa issues, but since making his 2024 debut at the beginning of June, he has posted a 3.14 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 28.2 innings. He's taken things to another level over the last month or so, giving up zero earned runs over his last eight games with a 0.79 WHIP and 16:2 K:BB in 12.2 innings. Brazoban hasn't seen much high-leverage work this season, however, managing only one hold and one win in 18 appearances.
Nardi might step into the closer role if Tanner Scott is traded, Kaushik Sampath of the Miami Herald reports. Nardi had a brutal start to the season, getting tagged for eight runs in his first four appearances, but since then the lefty has produced a palatable 3.50 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 47:10 K:BB through 36 innings. Scott becomes a free agent in the offseason and is almost certain to be dealt by next week's trade deadline, and with A.J. Puk now in Arizona, the path to the ninth inning could be fairly clear for Nardi. Huascar Brazoban could also be in the mix for closing duties in the wake of a Scott trade.
