Mervyl Melendez : Won’t start Saturday
Melendez is not in the Royals' starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers. Melendez has gone 0-for-12 over his last four starts, reaching base once on a walk over that span. Dairon Blanco will start in left field and bat eighth against Tigers right-hander Casey Mize.
Nelson Velázquez : Not starting Saturday
Velazquez is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers. Velazquez will begin Saturday's game on the bench with the Tigers sending out right-hander Casey Mize. Velazquez is hitless over his last six games and has reached base twice on walks over that span. Lefty-hitting Adam Frazier will start at DH and bat fifth in the lineup Saturday.
Carlos Hernández : Sent out on rehab assignment
Hernandez (shoulder) began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Friday. Omaha's game Friday was rained out, but Hernandez should be expected to make a few rehab outings with the club over the next few weeks as he looks to get up to speed. The right-hander missed all of spring training due to a right shoulder impingement.
Robert Witt : Drives in three runs
Witt went 1-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and a run scored during Friday's 8-0 win at Detroit. The 23-year-old started the scoring with a sacrifice fly during the third inning and added a two-run triple as part of a seven-run ninth for the Royals. Witt is in a bit of a power drought with no homers in his past 14 games, though he does have six RBI and three steals over his last four contests.
Jacob Lugo : Fans nine over seven scoreless
Lugo (4-1) earned the win Friday in Detroit after he struck out nine and allowed three hits and two walks across even scoreless innings. The right-hander generated 13 swinging strikes on 103 pitches as he and Detroit starter Reese Olson combined to give up just a single run in 14 frames. The swing-and-miss stuff from Lugo was a welcome sight after he posted a 4.1 K/9 through his first five starts of the season. The beginning of Lugo's tenure in Kansas City couldn't have gone much better, as he has a 1.66 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB over 38 innings.
Dustin Renfroe : Sitting again Friday
Renfroe is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Tigers. Renfoe isn't starting for the second straight game and for the third time in Kansas City's past four contests. The 32-year-old has a .149/.208/.284 slash line in 72 plate appearances and appears to be losing his grip on an everyday role. Adam Frazier will receive a start in right field Friday.
Salvador Perez : Clobbers first-inning homer
Perez went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run during Thursday's 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. Although Thursday's game was called after five innings due to poor weather, Perez managed to make an impact, swatting a two-run shot off Jose Berrios in the first frame. Over the Royals last two series', Perez is batting .435 with eight RBI and one strikeout across 27 plate appearances.
Cole Ragans : Picks up win in rainout
Ragans (1-2) earned the win Thursday against the Blue Jays, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four. Ragan technically pitched a complete game Thursday, with the outing being called after five innings due to rain. Regardless of the shortened game, Ragans managed to bounce back from a horrific start against the Orioles on Apr. 20 and got in the win column for the first time this season. Outside of his start against Baltimore, Ragans owns a 1.91 ERA with 33 strikeouts across 28.1 innings pitched. He's tentatively scheduled for a rematch with the Blue Jays in Toronto on Tuesday.
