Kalamazoo shootings suspect Jason Dalton is appearing in court Monday for the first time to be arraigned on six murder charges. Watch video of his appearance above.
Dalton, a 45-year-old Uber driver, is accused of killing four women, a man and a 17-year-old boy in a string of random shootings in the Kalamazoo area Saturday night.
Dalton was charged Monday with six counts of murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder and eight charges of using a firearm during the commission of a felony, Kalamazoo County prosecutor Jeff Getting announced.
“The Kalamazoo community is reeling from these senseless acts of violence that took so many innocent lives from us,” Getting said in a statement. “Our hearts are saddened for all of the victims, their families and friends who are dealing with this on a much more personal level.”
Dalton is accused of shooting a woman at a Kalamazoo apartment complex just before 6 p.m. Saturday. During the next few hours, he picked up and dropped off customers while driving for Uber. At about 10 p.m. he fatally shot Richard Smith, 53, and his son, Tyler Smith, 17, at a car dealership, police say.
About a half hour later he killed four women and critically wounded a teen girl in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant, police say. The four victims have been identified as Mary Lou Nye, 62; Mary Jo Nye, 60; Dorothy Brown, 74; and Barbara Hawthorne, 68.
