Donald Trump’s Suits & Ties: Where Are They Made?

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has focused his campaign on making “America Great Again,” which includes bringing overseas jobs back to the U.S. But critics, including Democrat Hillary Clinton, have hit back at Trump, saying his clothes — part of the Trump brand — are made in countries like China, Mexico and Turkey.

Trump has vowed that, if elected president, he will impose tariffs or taxes on American companies choosing to move jobs overseas. In a May 8 interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Trump was asked about his brand and if he should lead by example by making his clothing lines in America.

“Well, that’s because you can’t even buy them here,” Trump told Stephanopoulos.

“But if you want other companies to make their products in America, shouldn’t you make your products in America?” Stephanopoulos asked.

“But they don’t make a lot of these products,” Trump said. “They don’t even make them here anymore.”

So if Trump’s line of suits, ties and shirts aren’t made in America, where is the real estate mogul-turned-reality television show star-turned-Republican presidential nominee’s clothing made?

Politifact, the fact-checking website famous for its Truth-O-Meter, took Clinton’s claim during the 2016 Democratic National Convention asserting Trump makes “ties in China, not Colorado. Trump suits in Mexico, not Michigan. Trump furniture in Turkey, not Ohio. Trump picture frames in India, not Wisconsin.” The site ruled Clinton’s claim “mostly true” because most of the products listed were made overseas. Politifact claims it was able to find a Trump brand suit made in America, along with his cologne, some bedding, water and wine.

Trump Ties are Made in China or Listed As ‘Imported’

Politifact was able to find a tie sold on eBay that was made in China and others that simply said “Imported,” meaning they are made elsewhere and shipped to the United States for purchase. The site wasn’t able to find any neckties made in America.

A visit to the Trump Organization’s website, using its portal to shop for ties, sends a user to Amazon where its unclear where some ties are made. CNN reports that Ivanka Trump’s line of clothing and footwear are also “Imported.”

Trump’s Suits are Both Made in America & Overseas, Fact-Checkers Found

BuzzFeed compiled images of a Trump suit with a “Made in Mexico” label and related it to the Republican’s stance on immigration and his relationship with Macy’s. Trump told Fox‘s Chris Wallace in October 2015 he “never disputed” that his clothing line was made in Mexico.

Politifact said it “actually found quite a few [Trump suits] for sale on Amazon” that were made in America, but it also found suits made in India and China. Beginning around $80 and some listed as much as $280, Amazon predominantly says the Trump suits are “Imported.”

When Stephanopoulos interviewed Trump, the ABC host cited Brooks Brothers as a company that makes its suits in the U.S. “Well, they — but they don’t make here,” Trump said. “They don’t make here, not that I see.”
FactCheck.org, another political fact-checking site, said Trump’s assertion was “not accurate.”

“Although many of the products sold by Brooks Brothers continue to be made overseas, the company has in recent years been reshoring back to the U.S. some of its manufacturing,” FactCheck.org states.

Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ Hats are Made in America

In October 2015, Twitter exploded with claims that Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hats, worn by the candidate at campaign rallies and purchased on his campaign website for $25 each, were not made in America. Politifact checked that claim, awarding it the most negative declaration — the “Pants on Fire” rating.

The “make America Great Again” hats are,in fact, made in America. A company out of Los Angeles called Cali Fame makes the hats. Politifact reports, “From there, the hats are distributed by Ace Specialties LLC, a Lafayette, La., company that normally deals with gear for the oil and gas industry.
