Allison Rogers Furbish is a longtime editor and writer copy editing for Heavy.com since 2019.
With nearly two decades in the field, Allison was founding editor of the hyperlocal Lebanon Times in Lebanon, New Hampshire, from June 2013 to February 2016, and also wrote for its sister papers The Norwich Times and The Quechee Times.
Her first job out of college was covering local news for the Connecticut Valley Spectator, where she won the 2005 Best General News Story Award in New Hampshire Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. She also wrote for the Mount Desert Islander newspaper in Bar Harbor, Maine, winning second place for both Best Continuing Story by the Maine Press Association and Best Educational/Literacy Story by the National Newspaper Association for a series on the impacts of the No Child Left Behind Act on island schools.
The bulk of her career was spent years writing, editing and managing communications for corporate and nonprofit organizations, including Vital Communities - where she published a regular column in the regional Valley News - and King Arthur Baking.
Education
Allison earned her bachelor's degree in human ecology from College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, in 2004. She focused on literature, writing and journalism during her time there, eventually reporting on local news for the Mount Desert Islander. She also worked on a communications project with Acadia National Park, helping write and edit interpretive materials, and was a writing tutor for other COA students.
In 2013, Allison earned her MBA in sustainable business at the now-defunct Green Mountain College. Her capstone project investigated the feasibility of a business providing residential composting services, and she earned her master composter certification along the way.
She also participated in the 2008 Environmental Leadership Program New England Regional Fellowship.
