Devers went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, triple, two RBI and a walk Sunday against the Tigers. Devers third-inning triple plated a run while his solo blast in the eighth knotted the game at four and set the stage for extra innings. It was the second triple and 11th homer of the season for Devers, who entered the game in a mini 1-for-10 slump since accumulating four hits against the Orioles on Tuesday. It was also the first dinger for Devers since hitting homers in six-consecutive games from May 15-20.
Bello did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out five. Bello cruised through the first four in allowing only two baserunners and finished the sixth inning in line for a quality start and the win. For the first time all year, Bello was called upon to go back out for the seventh, but after recording one out, he allowed the next two runners to reach base prior to being pulled, with both runners eventually coming around to score, adversely impacting his final line. It was only the second time this year that Bello has not been involved in the decision. His next opportunity to take the hill will likely come next weekend when Boston travels to Chicago to take on the White Sox.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Abreu twisted his right ankle in the dugout during Sunday's loss to the Tigers and is receiving treatment, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. The 24-year-old went 1-for-4 with a run scored before he suffered the injury and was replaced by a pinch hitter during the ninth inning. Abreu will have Monday's team off day to aid in his recovery before the start of a two-game series versus Atlanta on Tuesday.
Refsnyder is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. Refsnyder will be on the bench for a second straight game following a stretch of five consecutive starts. Though he's maintaining an excellent .333/.414/.517 slash line over 99 plate appearances on the season, Refsnyder still isn't being treated as an everyday player, at least against right-handed pitching. The Red Sox may continue to rotate a number of players at the designated-hitter spot against righties, with Garrett Cooper picking up the assignment Sunday.
Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. Wong is on the bench for the second day in a row, but the Red Sox haven't indicated that their top backstop is dealing with any sort of injury or illness. Reese McGuire will get another turn behind the dish Sunday at Wong's expense.
The Red Sox recalled Dalbec from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. After being demoted to Triple-A in early May, Dalbec heated up at the plate during his time at Worcester, slashing .253/.336/.526 with seven home runs in his last 24 games prior to his call-up. Dalbec has a long track record of mashing at the Triple-A level, but his massive strikeout rates across various stints in the majors over the last few seasons likely mean that the ship has sailed on him re-emerging as an everyday player for the Red Sox. However, while he's up with the big club, the right-handed-hitting Dalbec could occupy the short side of a platoon at first base or in right field with left-handed hitters Dominic Smith and Wilyer Abreu.
The Red Sox transferred Whitlock (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL. The transaction is merely a procedural move to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder/outfielder Jamie Westbrook, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Worcester ahead of Sunday's game against the Tigers. Whitlock is already slated to miss the remainder of the season after he underwent an internal bracing procedure on his right elbow earlier in the week. He's expected to make a full recovery in 10-to-12 months, making it likely that he opens the 2025 season on the shelf.
