Bello (10-5) picked up the win Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over 6.1 innings against the Royals. He struck out three. Bello's day started by allowing a leadoff homer by Adam Frazier, but he was quickly staked to a 4-1 lead and only scattered two additional runs the rest of the way while working into the seventh inning for the second time in three starts and just the third time this season. Bello has alternated good and bad outings recently with Sunday representing his third quality start in his last six, then alternately allowing 16 earned runs in the other three while failing to complete five innings twice. Bello places 10th in the majors with 10 wins, however an ERA of 5.32 with a 1.47 WHIP and 85 strikeouts over 89.2 innings represent disappointing figures for the talented 25-year-old righty.
Giolito (elbow) said in an interview last week that he expects to start playing catch by the end of the month, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. "Working with the training staff, it's been fantastic," Giolito said of his recovery from the internal brace procedure he underwent March 12. "It's just making sure to stay motivated every day. Hitting each little goal and looking forward to the next major step, which will be beginning my throwing program." Only a few weeks after undergoing an elbow surgery that typically entails a 10-to-12-month recovery process, Giolito said in an appearance on "The Chris Rose Rotation" podcast that he expected to pitch at some point late in the 2024 season, but that was never a realistic goal. Giolito has since conceded that he won't return from the 60-day injured list this season, but he remains fully confident that he'll be ready to go for the start of the 2025 campaign. Giolito still looks to be trending well in his recovery from surgery thus far, and he could be cleared to resume throwing off a mound before the end of the season if he experiences no setbacks once he starts up his throwing program later this month.
Grissom (hamstring) will report to Triple-A Worcester during the All-Star break, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Grissom made progress over the previous week, building strength in both hamstrings to the point where the Red Sox mapped out a rehab plan. The infielder will have a few days of workouts before beginning a rehab assignment.
McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Royals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. McGuire will be rewarded with a second straight start to close out of the Red Sox's pre-All-Star-break schedule after he went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Saturday's 5-0 win. Though he's delivered two-hit performances in both of his last two starts, McGuire is still the clear No. 2 option at catcher behind Connor Wong, who holds a 204-point edge in OPS (.812 to .608) on the season.
Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Wong will get two straight days off to close out the Red Sox's pre-All-Star-break schedule, as Reese McGuire gets another nod behind the plate in the series finale. Despite his limited usage this weekend, Wong remains entrenched atop the depth chart at catcher after producing a .309 batting average and .812 OPS through 269 plate appearances on the season.
Devers went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a 5-0 win against the Royals on Saturday. Devers capped the scoring in the contest with a solo blast in the fifth inning. It was his 22nd long ball of the season, tied for eighth-most in the majors. Devers also has 59 RBI and is on pace to reach both 30 home runs and 100 RBI for the third time in the past four seasons.
Crawford (6-7) earned the win over Kansas City on Saturday, allowing two hits and issuing one walk while striking out four batters over seven-plus scoreless innings. Crawford was very sharp in the outing, allowing just a third-inning double and eighth-inning single along with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. The right-hander capped the pre-All-Star-break portion of the campaign with consecutive seven-inning scoreless outings, and he's on a streak of six straight quality starts. Overall, he's pitched to a 3.04 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 110:29 K:BB over 112.2 innings across 19 starts.
