Stephen Curry won the 2015 NBA Most Valuable Player Award, but his back court teammate Klay Thompson isn’t so bad himself. In fact, Thompson was one of the NBA’s breakout stars in 2014-15.

The 6-foot-7 guard has improved dramatically in his 4th season since being drafted. He has become a valuable all-around player and a lethal shooter, especially from three-point range — him and Curry are nicknamed “The Splash Brothers,” which is arguably the best nickname for a pair of teammates in professional sports.

Earlier this season, Thompson set an NBA record with 37 points in one quarter breaking former San Antonio Spurs’ George Gervin’s previous record of 33.

The 25-year-old also has an interesting background. His ethnicity stands out to NBA fans because of the similarity to his teammate Curry — whose father Dell Curry played in the NBA like Thompson’s. Klay is part Bahamian, part European. His father was born in the Bahamas and his mother, former volleyball player Julie Leslie, is of European descent. Thompson was actually born in Los Angeles, but moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon at age two where he was raised until he attended college.

Thompson is one of the NBA’s intriguing players, here is more of what you need to know about the Splash Brother:

Starting with his old man, Klay is the son of former NBA player Mychal Thompson. His mother is Julie Thompson and he has two brothers: Mychel Thompson and Trayce Thompson. Mychal Thompson was the 1st-overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft for the Portland Trail Blazers.

He was a solid NBA player, but most known for being the reserve center on back-to-back “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers championship teams in 1987 and 1988. Thompson has also been a color commentator for the Minnesota Timberwolves and now, his former team, the Lakers.

2. Klay Thompson Attended Washington State University

Klay was an excellent high school player whose strong suit was hitting the three-pointer (sound familiar?), and was a four-star recruit by Rivals.com. He eventually decided to stay pretty close to home and attend Washington State.

He spent three years as a Cougar and, during that time frame, improved his scoring average each season. He averaged 21.6 points in his junior season and was named First-Team All-Pac 10 in both his sophomore and junior seasons.

Thompson declared for the NBA Draft after his junior season and was the 11th overall selection by the Golden State Warriors in the 2011 NBA Draft.

It bears repeating, but Curry and Thompson are an all-world combination of natural athletic ability and talent, which has translated into elite NBA-level skill. Once Thompson started coming into his own, the writing was on the wall about how good these two could be together.

In 2014, together Curry and Thompson went more than 30 games with both hitting at least one three-point shot, which is an NBA record. In a February, Curry and Thompson became the first pair of teammates to record at least one 50-point game in a season since 1993-94.

Before the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Kevin Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers, they entertained the idea of offering Love to the Warriors in exchange for Klay Thompson and other players. The trade was shot down by Golden State who decided Thompson was a better overall fit for their team than Love, especially with Draymond Green and David Lee in the fold already.

In October 2014, Thompson signed a four-year, $70 million “max” contract extension with the Warriors.

2015 was Thompson’s true breakout season. He averaged a career-high 21.6 points-per-game, was named an NBA All-Star for the first time and selected to the All-NBA Third Team. He has been a vital part of why Golden State has had such a successful season and are one of the co-favorites to win the 2015 NBA Championship.
