Bafetimbi Gomis played 178 games for Lyon from 2009-2014, and scored 64 goals, but his best performance was against Dynamo Zagreb in the Champions League. Lyon’s strikeman scored a hat trick in seven minutes, scoring four goals in a 7-1 win for Lyon.
In the 45th minute, with Zagreb holding a 1-0 lead, Gomis received an unmarked cross from Aly Cissokho on the left, which had deflected off defender Sime Vrsaljko and looped over goalie Ivan Kelava. He calmly scored on the far post, his second goal against Zagreb in the 2011-2012 Champions League, as he also scored in their first Group D match that Lyon won 2-0.
Three minutes into the second half, winger Jimmy Briand headed on midfielder Yoann Gourcuff’s corner and Maxime Gonalons finished at the far post. From the restart, Briand pounded on a defensive lapse and squared for Gomis to side-foot in the 48th minute.
Dinamo were reeling and soon conceded again, with Gonalons feeding Cissokho, who in turn crossed for Gomis in the 52nd minute.
The French side would go on to lose to APOEL in the Round of 16, but Gomis’ hat trick will not be soon forgotten.
