The Jets claimed Mathis off waivers Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Mathis was waived by the Commanders on Saturday after being a healthy scratch in each of the last three games. He'll join the Jets and could suit up for the regular-season finale against the Dolphins on Sunday. Mathis appeared in 12 regular-season games for Washington and accumulated 17 tackles (eight solo) and one pass defense.
Mathis was placed on IR at the end of training camp after he sustained a calf injury in a preseason game. He played in the 2022 season opener but sustained a season-ending injury when he tore his meniscus. Now that he's healthy, the 2022 second-round pick out of Alabama will provide depth at defensive tackle behind the talented duo of Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen.
Mathis has missed the Commanders' first seven games of the season with a calf injury he's been tending to since the preseason, but he's finally approaching a return to pads ahead of Week 8. Washington's injury reports over this week will provide more information regarding his availability for that contest.
