The Oklahoma City fans have been waiting for the day they could show Kevin Durant their displeasure for leaving the Thunder to join the Warriors trio of stars. How they are choosing to troll Durant goes back to a seemingly meaningless Russell Westbrook July 4th Instagram post of cupcakes. What did the cupcakes mean?
While it seemed harmless at the times, Sports Illustrated’s Lee Jenkins explained the meaning behind the post and the term “cupcake”.
“He [Westbrook] didn’t judge him. All he did was take a picture. When Kendrick Perkins played center for the Thunder, he called teammates ‘cupcake’ if he thought they were acting a little soft. Westbrook and Durant adopted the term in jest. Westbrook posted a bittersweet pic on Instagram: three plates of cupcakes topped by red and blue stars and sprinkles,” Jenkins explained in a Sports Illustrated article.
Thunder fans decided to borrow the reference to “welcome” Durant back to Oklahoma City. Here’s a look at the shirt that some of the fans will be wearing tonight.
The front of the shirt reads “KowarD” which is a play on Durant’s “KD” nickname. The back of the shirt features a small cupcake under the neck. Essentially Thunder fans are pointing back to Westbrook’s Instagram post calling Durant soft.
Durant knew he was not going to be well-received in his OKC return. He spoke with ESPN about what he expected.
“I know they’re going to be rowdy in there, man. I’ve been a part of some of the loudest nights in that arena. So I know it’s not going to be the friendliest welcome, but, like I said, I can’t wait to see the people that I really built relationships with over my time there and, you know, I’m sure fans that I got to know throughout my time playing there, even though they might not cheer for me out loud, I’ll give ’em a wink and they know what we had deep down inside,” Durant told ESPN.
Here’s a rundown of some of the cupcake related ideas floating around the arena.
