The New York Jets have lost some depth in their wide receiving corps.
Gang Green announced on Saturday, December 31 that they placed veteran Jeff Smith on injured reserve ending his 2022 season.
In a corresponding move, the Jets have activated former first-round pick Cedric Ogbuehi to the 53-man roster.
Next Man up Mentality for Jets
On the surface, Smith being lost for the rest of the season won’t be featured in many headlines but he has been a critical depth piece and a key special teamer.
The former Boston College product appeared in 11 games this season. He hauled in eight receptions for 134 passing yards and averaged 16.8 yards per catch.
He also participated in 28 percent of the snaps for the Jets’ special teams which was a career-high.
Gang Green announced that they placed Smith on injured reserve due to a knee issue but they didn’t provide any additional details.
In positive news, the Jets have another option available at the offensive tackle spot. With Smith being placed on IR a new roster spot opened up and Gang Green filled it with a big-time return.
Earlier this week Ogbuehi returned to practice after missing the last four games with a groin injury. The former first-rounder originally joined the team back on September 27 when the Jets stole him off of the Houston Texans practice squad.
The big man has appeared in five games this season and has started in four of those contests.
The Epic Return of Jets QB Chris Streveler
It looks like the Jets will have three quarterbacks active on gameday versus the Seattle Seahawks and that list won’t include Zach Wilson.
Along with the flurry of roster moves announced, the Jets revealed that they’re elevating fan-favorite Chris Streveler.
In the team’s last game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday Night Football, Streveler got more action than anyone could have possibly anticipated.
The former CFL star took over for Wilson late in the third quarter and never came out of the game. Streveler was put into the game to provide a spark in a limited role but the coaching staff decided to keep him out there.
He went 10-of-15 for 90 passing yards but Streveler really impressed with his work on the ground. Streveler toted the rock nine times for 54 yards and averaged six yards a clip.
With Mike White returning to the lineup on Sunday, the Jets are simply hoping Streveler can contribute in a limited fashion in short-yardage and red-zone situations.
When the Jets have been able to run the ball successfully that has coincided with their ability to win football games. Over the last handful of weeks, Gang Green couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat as far as the run game is concerned.
With White back defenses will have to respect the passing game which should provide some lighter boxes. Additionally, if they’re looking for a spark, the RPO and wildcat package that Streveler provides should bring some razzle-dazzle to the offensive side of the ball.
