Jets Release QB Ahead of 2023 Season

The New York Jets have made a final decision with its quarterback room.

Gang Green is releasing veteran passer Tim Boyle, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. He will “likely” end up on the practice squad “if not picked up by another team,” Fowler tweeted.

The Firm Jets QB Decision Moving Forward

Boyle could also serve as the Jets’ emergency quarterback, per a new rule implemented in the offseason. According to the new rule, a team is allowed to have an emergency QB if he is on the active 53-man roster, meaning he can be in uniform and play if the starter and his backup get hurt during a game.

One possible reason the Jets decided to cut Boyle was because of a lack of interest in him from other teams compared with other players waived by the Jets, according to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.

“Ultimately you’d rather keep someone like a Xavier Gipson, a Kenny Yeboah, or other players they were worried would get claimed. You keep them and pass Tim Boyle through,” Rosenblatt said on the August 29 episode of “The Can’t Wait Podcast.”

A vested veteran, he wasn’t subject to the waiver wire system. In other words, as early as 4:01 pm Eastern time on Tuesday, August 29, he was able to re-sign with the Jets on their practice squad. If they’d kept him on the team and waived another fringe player — such as Gipson or Jason Brownlee, both wide receivers — they would have had to cross their fingers that that player wasn’t claimed when waiver claims are processed at noon Eastern time on August 30.

The Jets carried four quarterbacks through the first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns.

When Chris Streveler injured his thumb and couldn’t practice, the Jets moved on from him.

That left New York with three passers: Aaron Rodgers, Zach Wilson and Boyle. A-Rod and Wilson were always going to be on the team, with Boyle’s future with the team up in the air.

Boyle, 28, is a friend of Rodgers and was his teammate on the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2020.

Jets Make Official Roster Cuts to Get Down to 53

On Tuesday, August 29 at 4:41 pm Eastern time, the Jets officially announced their roster reductions ahead of the season.

The two roster cuts that were featured but not previously reported by outside media were punter Thomas Morstead and fullback Nick Bawden.

So now that the Jets have an initial 53-man roster, what’s next?

“Over the coming days, GM Joe Douglas and his staff will have the flexibility to continue to shape the roster, moving players to injured reserve, adding players who were let go from around the league, and executing trades in addition to filling a 16-person practice squad,” the Jets said in an article posted on the team website.

Team reporters Ethan Greenberg and Randy Lange highlighted three areas to watch over the next couple of days: waiver claims, practice squad and injury designations (IR/PUP/NFI).

That roster shuffling will answer the remaining roster questions. The Jets have a 16-man practice squad to fill, waiver claims will be processed by noon on August 30, and injury announcements will open roster spots.
