Coming off a last-minute loss at Clemson, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have to deal with the triple-option trickery of traditional rival Navy in an intriguing college football betting matchup.
The host Fighting Irish are listed as 14.5-point favorites against the Midshipmen at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. They came within a missed two-point conversion of taking Clemson to overtime last week.
The Irish, under coach Brian Kelly, are 8-2 SU and 3-5-2 ATS during October games at Notre Dame Stadium that they entered as a favorite. Notre Dame is also 4-1 SU and 2-3 ATS versus Navy since Kelly took the reins in South Bend in 2010 according to the OddsShark College Football Database.
Notre Dame, which is 4-1 SU and 4-1 ATS, shut down Georgia Tech’s triple option during a 30-22 win in September. The Fighting Irish, with a defense led OLB Jaylon Smith, should be resigned to the reality that it will be nearly impossible to completely bottle up Navy QB Keenan Reynolds, who is closing in on the NCAA career record for rushing touchdowns.
They will need to keep Navy from having an excessive number of explosive plays and win the battle of third downs, like they did against Georgia Tech. Navy converts more than half of its third-down plays.
Offensively, Irish QB DeShone Kizer and his coaches will need to make more use of WR William Fuller. The NFL prospect was contained during the rain-soaked Clemson game but is averaging 20.5 yards per catch, with six touchdowns.
Navy, which is 4-0 SU and 4-0 ATS, is seeking to enhance its chance of earning a good bowl bid by putting up a good fight. The Midshipmen are 1-9 SU and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games where they were at a two-TD underdog. While Navy lost FS Kwazel Bertrand to a broken ankle last week, coach Ken Niumatalolo still has a well-seasoned secondary with two seniors and two juniors.
The total for Saturday’s Navy vs. Notre Dame betting matchup is set at 55 points at the sportsbooks. The total has gone UNDER in four of Navy’s last six home games. The total has gone OVER in nine of Notre Dame’s last 13 games, and four of its last six home contests.
The OddsShark Computer projects a 42.5-22 Fighting Irish victory, but history shows the Midshipmen know how to put a scare into good teams on the road.
Navy vs. Notre Dame Betting Pick: Navy ATS, Notre Dame SU
