Seahawks GM John Schneider said Thursday that Smith is "the guy" and fellow QB Sam Howell was brought in to be a backup, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports. That's not exactly surprising given the gaps in both 2023 performance and 2024 compensation between the two quarterbacks, but it'll nonetheless be comforting to anyone counting on Smith to start this upcoming season. It'll be especially good news for Smith if this is Seattle's only big QB move during the offseason, as the team has been mentioned in connection with Justin Fields and various draft prospects. Drafting a QB is definitely still possible, but the trade for Howell is a pretty clear signal that Seattle isn't in on Fields. The team has mostly focused on smaller moves so far this offseason, including re-signing TE Noah Fant and restructuring WR Tyler Lockett's contract. The interior offensive line is a glaring weakness as the roster is currently constructed, but there are still plenty of options to upgrade via both free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft.

Won't face competition from Howell
Seahawks GM John Schneider said Thursday that Smith is "the guy" and fellow QB Sam Howell was brought in to be a backup, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports. That's not exactly surprising given the gaps in both 2023 performance and 2024 compensation between the two quarterbacks, but it'll nonetheless be comforting to anyone counting on Smith to start this upcoming season. It'll be especially good news for Smith if this is Seattle's only big QB move during the offseason, as the team has been mentioned in connection with Justin Fields and various draft prospects. Status in question for Thursday
Smith took a big hit from Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald on the second-to-last play of the third quarter in Sunday's loss in Los Angeles, but he was able to return for the Seahawks' final possession, leading them into position for a potential game-winning field goal from Jason Myers. The kick was missed, and Smith proceeded to be listed as a non-participant on Monday's practice report. He mixed into drills as a limited participant at Tuesday's walk-through session and now has a chance to play Thursday. Both the quarterback and head coach Pete Carroll have seemed optimistic about Smith's chances to suit up Week 12, but Smith's availability won't be confirmed until Seattle releases its inactive list approximately 90 minutes before the 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff. If Smith isn't available, Drew Lock will lead Seattle's offense.
Optimism for Thursday
Smith suffered a contusion to the tendon at the bottom of his triceps on his right arm, per Henderson, but he's expected to play through the issue Week 12. Any negative impact to Smith's accuracy against San Francisco's stout defense could, of course, prove significant, especially on a short week. As such, it will be worth monitoring Smith's status closely in practice.
Ends slump with huge passing day
Last year's Comeback Player of the Year was forced to make another mini-comeback Sunday after stinking up the joint in last week's 37-3 loss to the Ravens. Smith wasted no time righting the ship with a pristine passing display from the jump that can only be rivaled by his dominant Week 2 performance against the Lions in an overtime thriller. The 33-year-old boosted his season totals to 2,171 passing yards with 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions through nine weeks. Smith will attempt to avenge an earlier loss to the Rams this season when the two NFC West foes meet in Los Angeles next Sunday.
