The Americans needed a Sunday miracle to prevent the Europeans from winning the Ryder Cup Sunday for the eighth time in 10 tries.
And long before play was over on the final day, it became clear that the miracle wouldn't take place.
Europe closed out the United States Sunday, continuing the dominance it had displayed over the first two days of the tournament. With world No. 1 Rory McIlroy leading the way and with a Tiger Woods-less United States squad reeling, Europe clinched the Cup with Jamie Donaldson's victory over Keegan Bradley.
The United States hasn't won a Ryder Cup on European soil since 1993 — a streak that will continue for at least four more years.
