The world's best distance runners gathered Sunday for the New York City Marathon, with Mary Keitany of Kenya coming from behind to win the women's pro division in one of the closest finishes in history and Keitany's countryman Wilson Kipgang pulling away in the final half mile to win the men's division.
The race started on the Staten Island side of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, continued through Brooklyn and Queens before crossing into Manhattan, into the Bronx and back into Manhattan for the finish in Central Park. Along the way, fans cheered runners on, some holding signs and some wearing costumes.
The field included tennis star Caroline Wozniacki and an NBA relay team that included commissioner Adam Silver, among other notable participants.
