The Cleveland Cavaliers may have ultimately fallen short of their goal to win an NBA championship this season, but that has not stopped oddsmakers from making them the 3/1 betting favorites to capture their first title in 2016.

The Cavaliers were short-handed without All-Stars Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving in the 2015 NBA Finals, leaving LeBron James without the help he needed to compete against the Golden State Warriors this year. Love missed the entire series due to a shoulder injury while Irving suffered a fractured kneecap in Game 1, but James still led Cleveland to a pair of wins in the series before Golden State proved to be too much for him.

The Warriors ended up winning their first NBA championship since 1975 and fourth overall in six games over the Cavs thanks to the strong play of reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry, surprising NBA Finals MVP Andre Iguodala, and an overall team effort that also saw them win a franchise-record 67 games during the regular season under first-year head coach Steve Kerr.

Golden State is the 5/1 second choice to win the 2016 NBA title behind the Cavs, and the team figures to be just as good next year in attempting to become the first repeat champ since the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010.

Other top contenders for the 2016 NBA championship include the Oklahoma City Thunder (7/1), Chicago Bulls (10/1), Los Angeles Clippers (10/1) and San Antonio Spurs (10/1). The Thunder could be the most dangerous team of that group after missing the playoffs for the first time in six years due to injuries to Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook that caused them to miss a combined 70 games.

Oklahoma City fired head coach Scott Brooks following the disappointing season and hired Billy Donovan of the Florida Gators to replace him. The Bulls also fired head coach Tom Thibodeau after losing to Cleveland in the second round and brought in former player Fred Hoiberg from the Iowa State Cyclones to lead them in 2016.
