On Friday morning, a Hamas attack on Israeli soldiers ended with multiple casualties and a kidnapping. Second Lt. Hadar Goldin, 23, was reportedly captured while on a mission to destroy a tunnel. According to The New York Times, Hamas has confirmed the capture but claimed it occurred before the ceasefire began at 6 a.m.
The attack ended an important 72-hour ceasefire agreed to by both sides for humanitarian reasons.

The New York Times reports that Israeli soldiers were on an early morning mission to destroy a tunnel leading beneath the border between Gaza and Israel when they were ambushed. According to an IDF spokesperson, a number of militants, including one “suicide attacker,” emerged from the tunnel. Evidence suggested that the 23-year-old officer had been dragged into the tunnel.
The group attacked was part of an infantry brigade.
2. 2 Soldiers Were Reportedly Killed
In the attack where Goldin was captured, two other Israeli soldiers were reportedly killed. The two soldiers were later identified as 26-year-old Major Benaya Sarel and 20-year-old Sergeant Liel Gidoni. These deaths bring the Israeli death toll for the 2014 Gaza-Israeli conflict to 66 people.
3. The Ceasefire Ended After Around 90 Minutes
On Thursday, a hard-fought 72-hour ceasefire was finally agreed to by both sides of the conflict. The cease fire began at 6 a.m. local time and was called off shortly after the 9:30 a.m. news of the attack and capture.
The ceasefire was announced late Thursday evening in India, where the United States and the United Nations pushed for international humanitarian intervention.
4. Around 35 Palestinians Have Already Died in the Latest Shelling
Shortly after the Israel learned of this morning’s attack, Gaza was bombarded. In this most recent bombing, Gaza health officials told the New York Times that 35 Palestinians had been killed and over 100 injured. As Gaza braces for another long day and night of bombardment, the Palestinian death toll of the conflict is raised to 1,410.

The BBC reports that the UK government is now “looking into” the nationality of Hadar Goldin amid reports that he is a dual citizen of Israel and the United Kingdom.
