Sergio Garcia has a different look about him these days. The man who once said he wasn't "good enough for the majors" is now brimming with confidence. While in the past bogies and bad breaks would have sent him into a downwards spiral that would ruin his round and tournament, those things no longer bother him.
And the 37-year-old Spaniard has one person in particular he can thank for this turnaround: His new fiancee, Angela Akins.
“I’ve always been very open about it,” Garcia says. “I’m not going to lie, but when things are going well off the course it’s much easier to feel comfortable on it. I’m excited about a lot of the things that are coming, not only my way, but also Angela’s way, and our families and stuff. So we’re very excited about the future.”
Since Garcia began dating the 31-year-old former Golf Channel reporter in 2016, he has captured his first PGA Tour win (the Byron Nelson in May 2016) in four years and his first European Tour win (Dubai Desert Classic in February 2017) in three years. No coincidence: Akins was by his side for each victory.
Golf may be an individual sport in the fact that only one person is actually competing, but there's no overstating the importance of having a strong support system behind you. Garcia, who has had high-profile relationships in the past with former tennis World No. 1 Martina Hingis and Morgan Leigh-Norman, is learning exactly that.
