The Georgia Bulldogs being in the unfamiliar position of being favored over the Alabama Crimson Tide has created an intriguing Saturday college football betting matchup.
The Crimson Tide are listed as betting underdogs for the first time in 72 games, with undefeated Georgia listed as a 1.5-point to 2.5-point favorite over Alabama at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The line opened as a pick’em.
Georgia, which has not defeated a Top 15 Alabama team since 1976, is 4-0 SU and 2-2 ATS so far this season. It is also 9-1 SU and 5-4-1 ATS over its last 10 conference games at Sanford Stadium.
The Bulldogs boast an excellent 1-2 tandem at tailback in Heisman Trophy candidate Nick Chubb and backup Sony Michel, but Alabama allows only 56 rushing yards per game.
Bulldogs quarterback Greyson Lambert has yet to throw an interception this season, although his team’s running game is keeping him out of obvious passing situations. Lambert is also the type of pocket passer that Alabama typically handles well.
October is typically not a kind month to coach Mark Richt’s Bulldogs. They are 7-3 SU and 3-6-1 ATS in their past 10 home games during the month according to the OddsShark College Football Database.
Coach Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide, 3-1 SU and 3-1 ATS thus far, have zero margin for error as far as their College Football Playoff hopes are concerned after a 43-37 home loss to Mississippi on Sept. 19. Saban’s squad is 8-2 SU and 6-4 ATS in its last 10 October road games.
Tide RB Derrick Henry is an asset that can help his team wear down defenses and control the tempo of a game. Alabama has committed fully to fifth-year senior QB Jake Coker, who has begun receiving all first-team reps in practice and played much better in a Sept. 26 non-conference win over Louisiana-Monroe.
If Coker connects on deep passes and the Tide reduce the turnovers that contributed to their loss, they are capable of maintaining their mastery of the Bulldogs.
The total for Saturday’s Alabama vs. Georgia betting matchup is set at 55 points at the sportsbooks. The total has gone OVER in Alabama’s last five games against Georgia. The total has gone UNDER in four of Georgia’s last six games.
