Mark Canha: Breaking News

Granted release

Canha has been granted his release by the Rangers on Thursday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Canha will get a chance for a fresh start after opening the 2026 season at the Rangers' extended spring training site. He has yet to play in any contests so far this year. The veteran has appeared in games with the Mets, Brewers, Tigers, Giants and Royals over the last three seasons, and he'll look for another major-league opportunity in the near future.

Seeking split with Texas

Canha requested his release from the Rangers on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Canha is seeking a big-league opportunity elsewhere after signing a minor-league contract with Texas in February. The 37-year-old has opened the 2026 campaign at the team's extended spring training site in Arizona, and he has yet to appear in a contest. Canha produced a .212 average with one home run, six RBI and nine runs scored over 113 at-bats in 46 regular-season contests with the Royals in 2025. If he is granted his release, there's a good chance another squad will give him a shot with their major-league roster this season.

Staying in organization

Canha told the Rangers on Wednesday that he will remain with the organization for the time being, despite not winning a spot on the Opening Day roster, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. After he was unable to beat out Andrew McCutchen for a spot on the Opening Day squad as a reserve corner outfielder/designated hitter, Canha initially informed the Rangers that he didn't plan on reporting to Triple-A Round Rock. However, after evaluating his options, Canha appears to have had a change of heart and will stick around in the organization, at least temporarily. It's unclear if he intends to head to Round Rock when the Triple-A season gets underway Friday, or if he'll simply remain at extended spring training in Arizona.
