Civale (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance Thursday with Triple-A Las Vegas, MLB.com reports. Civale has been shelved since May 26 with right shoulder tendinitis and seems to be progressing well in his recovery. After beginning a throwing progression June 1, the right-hander is now set to take the next step and jump into game action. Should Civale come out of Thursday's outing feeling healthy, a return to the Athletics' rotation for his next start seems likely. Prior to hitting the injured list, he posted a 5-2 record with a 4.20 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 39:17 K:BB across 55.2 innings (11 starts).

Latest Athletics News
Aaron Civale : Slated for rehab outing Thursday
Alexander Williams : Hits first career homer
Williams went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Brewers. Williams was playing in his 99th major-league Wednesday and finally clubbed his first homer, a sixth-inning blast off Brandon Sproat. Since he was traded from the Pirates on May 16, Williams has appeared in 16 games, batting .212 with a .599 OPS, four RBI, four runs scored, two doubles and no stolen bases over 35 plate appearances. He's part of a three-man battle for two spots in the lineup on the left side of the infield right now -- Williams has started six of the last eight games at shortstop but could cede some time to Max Muncy, who was activated from the injured list Monday after recovering from a broken hand. Zack Gelof's usage at third base is likely to impact Muncy's playing time, which could trickle down to Williams depending on who's got the hot bat.
Carlos Cortes : Pops homer in win
Cortes went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Brewers. Cortes clubbed his first homer since May 24 versus the Padres to pull the Athletics within a run in the seventh inning. The outfielder has been seeing steady time in right field against right-handed pitchers, primarily working in a platoon with Colby Thomas while bumping Lawrence Butler into a reserve role. However, Cortes has gone just 4-for-21 (.190) in June after batting .265 in May to gain a foothold in the lineup. Overall, Cortes is hitting .310 with an .890 OPS, six homers, 18 RBI, 16 runs scored and a stolen base across 182 plate appearances, but his consistency has faded a bit. That may not cost him playing time if Brent Rooker (knee) ends up on the injured list, but it could open the door for Butler to get more looks.
Lawrence Butler : Hits go-ahead homer
Butler went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Brewers. Butler put the Athletics ahead in the seventh inning with his first long ball since April 29 versus the Royals. The outfielder has slipped into a part-time role, and he's not helping his cause in June, going 3-for-18 (.167) over eight games this month. Overall, he's batting .165 with a .507 OPS, four homers, 16 RBI, 18 runs scored, three doubles and four stolen bases through 183 plate appearances. Butler will need to show some consistency at the plate to displace Carlos Cortes from the starting job in right field versus right-handed pitchers. There was room in the lineup for both of them Wednesday since Brent Rooker sat out due to knee soreness.
Elvis Alvarado : Nabs first save of season
Alvarado struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Brewers. The Athletics deployed Scott Barlow and Hogan Harris prior to the ninth inning in a close game. Mark Leiter didn't appear, so it's somewhat notable that Alvarado was trusted to lock things down in the ninth while pitching for the second day in a row. Alvarado struggled a bit early in the season after opening the campaign on the big-league roster, but he's allowed just one hit while striking out nine over 4.1 innings across three appearances during this stint in the majors. He's collected a save, four holds and a 2-0 record despite his 5.79 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB through 14 innings overall. Alvarado is the eighth pitcher to earn a save for the Athletics this season as the team's closing situation continues to be a large committee.
Jackson Perkins : Goes four innings again
Perkins allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings in a no-decision versus the Brewers on Wednesday. Perkins was a little better this time out, but he still wasn't very efficient in his second start of the year. He threw 56 of 89 pitches for strikes and allowed two home runs while pitching in hitter-friendly Las Vegas Ballpark. He's allowed eight runs on 10 hits and five walks while striking out 10 over eight innings in his two starts. Overall, Perkins has a 6.25 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 43:12 K:BB through 36 innings over 19 appearances this season. If the Athletics still need his help in the rotation, Perkins would be tentatively lined up for a home start in Sacramento against the Pirates next week.
Brent Rooker : Sitting with knee soreness
Rooker won't play in Wednesday's game against the Brewers due to knee soreness, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Manager Mark Kotsay said the team will wait to see how Rooker feels leading up to Friday's game against the Rockies before deciding whether he needs to spend time on the injured list. Carlos Cortes will work as the Athletics' designated hitter Wednesday while Lawrence Butler starts in right field, and that could be the defensive alignment the team uses if Rooker has to miss more time.
Brent Rooker : Idle again Wednesday
Rooker isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against Milwaukee. Rooker has slashed .243/.300/.541 with three homers and eight runs scored across his last 10 games, but the A's will now have him begin on the bench for a second consecutive game. Carlos Cortes will move into the DH spot as a result, opening up right field for Lawrence Butler.
