Martini joined the A's on a minor-league contract Thursday. Martini was designated for assignment by the Rockies and elected free agency Monday. He's landed a new opportunity and could eventually find his way to the big-league club as a depth option in the outfield.

Nicholas Martini: Breaking News
Becomes free agent
Martini elected free agency Monday, per MiLB's transactions log. Martini lost his spot on the 40-man roster Friday. Rather than choosing to accept an assignment in the minor leagues, he's decided to test free agency after struggling through a 9-for-44 clip at the plate over 19 matchups with the Rockies in May.
DFA'd by Colorado
The Rockies designated Martini for assignment Friday. Martini was a lineup regular against right-handed pitching through the first two months of the season, but he failed to take advantage of the playing time with a .225/.288/.294 slash line in 111 plate appearances. Sam Hilliard was selected to the major-league roster in a corresponding move.
