Rather than choosing to accept an assignment in the minor leagues, he's decided to test free agency after struggling through a 9-for-44 clip at the plate over 19 matchups with the Rockies in May.
The Rockies designated Martini for assignment Friday. Martini was a lineup regular against right-handed pitching through the first two months of the season, but he failed to take advantage of the playing time with a .225/.288/.294 slash line in 111 plate appearances. Sam Hilliard was selected to the major-league roster in a corresponding move.
