During the 2022 AFC Divisional round game between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs, an unexpected player went off. Bills second-year receiver Gabe Davis recorded eight receptions for 201 yards and four touchdowns.
Even though the Bills dropped the game, it felt like the team had a breakout star in the waiting in Davis. Unfortunately, Davis never lived up to the hype from the AFC Divisional round and left the Bills at the end of 2023.
Gabe Davis Was Supposed To Shine With The Bills
In four seasons in Buffalo, Davis appeared in 64 games, recording 2,969 receiving yards and 29 scores. Even though Davis had good stats, it felt like he was just nonexistent in some games. The Bills and Davis decided to part ways, but a reunion could happen down the line.
Last season, Davis played in ten games for the Jacksonville Jaguars before suffering a season-ending torn meniscus injury. Fourteen months after signing with the Jaguars, the team decided to release him.
Currently, Davis is unsigned by any team but could be shortly. Since training camp is going on, players around the league could start to get injured. With injuries potentially happening at receiver, Davis could be on the short list of names to be signed.
There is also a chance the 26-year-old receiver could end up on a team that needs more depth. There are a handful of teams that should add another receiver, with the New York Giants at the top.
Giants Listed A Fit For Davis
Kevin Patra from NFL.com thinks the Giants would be the “best fit” to sign Davis.
“Big Blue reportedly met with Davis early in the offseason process, but the wideout has yet to find a landing spot. The connection with New York is obvious: General manager Joe Schoen was part of the Bills front office that drafted Davis in the fourth round in 2020, and head coach Brian Daboll was Davis’s offensive coordinator in Buffalo for the first two seasons of his career,” Patra wrote. “The Giants’ receiver room is iffy behind the starting crew, led by stud Malik Nabers. Davis would provide field-stretching ability to pair with Darius Slayton. And camp injury scares to Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson highlight this group’s need for depth. After quickly washing out of Jacksonville, Davis profiles as a player who, in the right spot, could revamp his standing with a one-year contract. Given the familiarity with Daboll, New York makes sense as the setting for a prove-it deal.”
The Giants should add another receiver to their roster since they need to provide help around rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. Even though veteran quarterback Russell Wilson will start Week 1 for New York, it doesn’t mean he will all season.
Dart is going to get a chance to start this season, and having good receivers around him should help him. Even though the Giants have one of the best receivers in Nabers, adding Davis would free up Nabers more.
