The Boston Celtics are in the middle of their busiest offseason in years. With training camp quickly approaching and one roster spot still open, the question now is how they’ll choose to fill it.
One option has been floated by Bobby Krivitsky of Hardwood Houdini, who suggested Boston as a landing spot for KJ Martin after the Utah Jazz waived the 24-year-old forward.
Why KJ Martin Fits the Celtics’ Needs
Martin averaged 6.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 21.2 minutes per game last season, splitting time between the Jazz and the Philadelphia 76ers.
His best stretch came in 2022–23 with the Houston Rockets, when he posted 12.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in 28 minutes per contest. That year showed what he can do with consistent playing time and highlighted the athleticism that keeps him intriguing.
At six-foot-six, Martin brings length, versatility, and defensive potential. He fits the mold of a player who could thrive in Joe Mazzulla’s system, running the floor in transition and guarding multiple positions.
Concerns About Martin’s Fit in Boston
Shooting is the biggest red flag. Martin is a career 32.9 percent shooter from beyond the arc on 1.8 attempts per game.
The inconsistency showed last season. With Philadelphia, he hit 38.1 percent from deep, but on fewer than one attempt per contest. In Utah, his attempts nearly doubled, and his efficiency cratered to 18.9 percent.
There’s also the issue of role. Martin has bounced from Houston to the Clippers to Philadelphia and Utah in just five seasons. While his size and athleticism are tools every team wants, he hasn’t proven he can consistently put them together.
Should the Celtics Take the Chance?
Boston could decide to wait before making a move. Keeping the final roster spot open offers tax savings and flexibility heading into the season.
But there’s upside in taking a flier. Martin’s age, athleticism, and low-cost value make him a candidate worth monitoring. A training camp deal could give the Celtics a closer look without long-term risk.
It’s worth noting that Danny and Austin Ainge, who both know the value of athletic wings, passed on keeping Martin in Utah. That could be a warning sign for Boston.
Still, the fit is interesting. Signing Martin wouldn’t dominate headlines, but it could be the type of depth addition that pays off down the line for a Celtics team intent on staying deep and versatile.
