Hampton most likely won't be back after Week 12 bye

Rookie running back Omarion Hampton hasn’t seen the field since suffering an ankle injury in Week 5.

But there are many signs now pointing toward a long-awaited return.

As Yahoo Sports noted, Hampton sparked buzz this week after posting a cryptic one-word TikTok caption: “Soon.”

The video featured him lowering his shoulder into a Raiders linebacker, an intentional nod to the Chargers’ first post-bye opponent in Week 13.

While the team hasn’t officially activated him yet, league reporters expect his 21-day practice window to open after the bye.

Internally, the Chargers believe he’s close.

As one team source noted, Hampton “has been itching to get back.”

Hampton’s own post, paired with the timing, is fueling optimism that he could suit up against the Raiders this week.

What Hampton’s Return Means for the Chargers’ Offense

Before the injury, the UNC product was one of the NFL’s most productive rookies.

In five games, he totaled 314 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and added 20 receptions for 136 yards.

The Chargers have spent the last month operating with a inconsistent backfield.

With Najee Harris tearing his Achilles in Week 3 and Hampton going down in Week 5, Kimani Vidal has shouldered most of the load.

He has been good at times but also very inconsistent.

Behind him, the Chargers have had basically no running back production.

Los Angeles remains dead last in advanced run-blocking metrics, despite ranking 12th in total rushing yards as the interior line has been unable to generate consistent push.

Before going down, Hampton averaged 13.2 touches per game and routinely created yardage after contact.

His explosiveness gives the Chargers something they haven’t had since early October.

However, many analysts have warned the Chargers may need to manage his workload carefully as he is going to be running behind a very inconsistent and hurt offensive line.

Still, his return could be a major spark for a team trying to keep its playoff chances alive.

The Chargers’ passing offense has sputtered in recent weeks, and Harbaugh’s system functions best with an explosive runner.

Re-introducing Hampton, even in a rotation with Vidal, provides balance the team has sorely missed.

If he avoids setbacks during practice, his debut after the bye against Las Vegas seems increasingly realistic.

Fantasy Football Impact

For fantasy managers, Hampton’s looming return might be even more impactful than it is for the Chargers.

Before the injury, he averaged 15.4 PPR fantasy points per game, ranking among the most efficient rookie backs in the league.

As Ryan Shea of Sports Illustrated noted, Hampton played more than 50 snaps per game and handled over 74% of the running back workload.

Kimani Vidal flashed at times but remained wildly inconsistent, producing boom or bust weeks that left fantasy managers guessing.

When Hampton is healthy, he is by far the more complete and trusted option.

Shea even labeled Hampton as a premier “buy-low” target, suggesting this may be the final chance to acquire him before he regains the feature back role.

If Hampton is activated for Week 13 and returns anywhere near his pre-injury volume, he immediately becomes a high-end RB2 and possibly much more down the stretch.

Hampton’s message was simple: “Soon.”

For the Chargers and fantasy managers alike, “soon” might be just at the right time.
