Brian Burns is having a special season on the field with 13 sacks so far. His performance has triggered a massive contract incentive while also improving his 2026 salary due to his contract including performance-based escalators.

Burns Triggered $1.8 Million Incentive Plus Escalators

According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Burns triggered a $1.8 million incentive for recording 12.5 sacks, a mark that he reached back in Week 11 with his 13th sack of the season.

His contract also includes escalators, so his 2026 base salary will increase by $1.8 million due to him meeting the high-sack threshold. This pushes his base salary to $24.1M and his 2026 cap hit to $36.6M, according to Duggan.

Burns’ contract, including these incentives and escalators, reflects more than just numbers on a contract sheet. It’s a statement from the Giants’ front office: Burns is not only one of the most talented pass-rushers in the league today, but he’s also integral to the team’s long-term strategy.

With this security, Burns can continue to focus on what he does best — making quarterbacks’ lives miserable, generating turnovers, and creating momentum-swinging plays that the Giants’ defense has often lacked this season. Outside of him, the rest of the defensive line (and the back seven behind them) have struggled mightily, making his contributions all the more valuable.

Chasing History: Can Burns Hit 20 Sacks?

While his contract is secure, Burns isn’t resting on his laurels. Through 13 games, he’s already recorded 13 sacks — putting him on pace for an estimated 17 by the end of the season.

But the real story is what’s still possible: Burns has already had four games this year with 2.0 or more sacks, meaning a 20-sack season is very much within reach. If he maintains this pace over the final four games, he could join an elite club of Giants pass-rushers who have reached that milestone.

Joining Lawrence Taylor (20.5 sacks in 1986) and Michael Strahan (22.5 sacks in 2001) would cement Burns’ place in franchise history. That’s no small feat for a team that has consistently produced top-tier defensive talent over the past 50 years. Achieving 20+ sacks would not only highlight Burns’ individual skill but also signal his ability to carry a defense, even in a season where the Giants as a whole have struggled to meet expectations.

Burns currently ranks second in the NFL in sacks, trailing only Myles Garrett, who has an astounding 20 sacks as he looks likely to get the all-time NFL sack record. In a defense that has had its ups and downs, Burns has been a constant disruptor.

His combination of speed, technique, and power has forced quarterbacks into hurried decisions and created opportunities for teammates. Beyond the numbers, he’s made himself invaluable— a player who can shift the course of a game with one play.

However, over the last few weeks, Burns’ production has dipped. After recording two sacks against the Packers on November 16th, he has not recorded a sack in the last couple of weeks. He has also not recorded a sack against the Commanders through three quarters at MetLife Stadium.

With four games remaining, Giants fans have plenty to watch for. Burns’ chase for 20 sacks is about more than stats; it’s about legacy. If he reaches that mark, he won’t just be another Pro Bowler — he’ll be a player whose name stands alongside the greatest pass-rushers in franchise history. And with his contract escalators rewarding his play, Burns will continue to define the Giants’ defense for years to come.
