The Chicago Cubs took a nice step in the right direction during the 2025 season. The Cubs finished the 2025 campaign with a 92-70 record and in second place in the National League Central. With this record, they successfully got back into the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
During the playoffs, the Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres in the MLB Wild Card round, winning the series 2-1. However, they then fell in the NLDS to the Milwaukee Brewers, losing the series 3-2. While the Cubs forced Game 5 after going down 2-0 in the series to Milwaukee, they lost the final game of the series by a 3-1 final score.
While the Cubs had a tough finish to the playoffs, there is no question that they should be happy with how their 2025 season went. They got back into the postseason, and they will now be looking to build off it in 2026 from here.
With the Cubs taking a step forward this past season, they are now looking to improve their roster in a big way. One star free agent who they have been heavily linked to this offseason is Alex Bregman, and it makes sense when looking at their current roster.
Now, a promising update has been provided on the possibility that the Cubs could be the lucky team that ends up winning the Bregman sweepstakes.
Cubs Predicted to Land Star Infielder Alex Bregman
In a recent article for The Athletic, Jim Bowden named the best fits for each top MLB free agent. For Bregman, Bowden predicted that the best fit for the star infielder is the Cubs.
“Bregman is looking for a long-term commitment like Schwarber and Pete Alonso just received. His best shot to get that at this point would be with the Cubs, who will be trying to replace Tucker in the lineup. The Cubs covet Bregman’s leadership and mentorship of younger players. If they were to sign him, they could move Matt Shaw to second base and trade impending free agent Nico Hoerner or just move Shaw to the outfield,” Bowden wrote.
There is no question that Bregman and the Cubs look like a strong fit. They need another impactful right-handed hitter in their lineup, and Bregman would provide them with just that if signed. The truth can be seen with his stats, as he had 18 home runs, 62 RBIs, and a .273 batting average this past season with the Boston Red Sox. He has also hit at least 23 home runs in five MLB seasons.
Cubs Have Some Competition For Bregman
With Bregman being a legitimate star, there are plenty of other teams besides the Cubs that would love to add him to their roster. Due to this, Bowden also argued that the Detroit Tigers and Red Sox would be good fits for Bregman.
The Tigers have long been linked to Bregman, and it would make sense for them to add him when looking at their current roster. They are in need of another star infielder, and Bregman would have the potential to thrive there.
As for the Red Sox, given how well Bregman played for them this past season, it would be wise of them to bring him back to Boston if they can. This is especially so when noting that the Red Sox have already missed out on some of their top previous targets.
