NASCAR enters 2026 with a clearer direction after years of legal battles, leadership turnover, and team discord. The organization now aims to prioritize racing over off-track drama.

Steve O’Donnell leads this shift, emphasizing patience and steady progress. As reported by The Athletic, the sport starts the year with a “clear runway,” a notable change from previous turmoil. Officials have already made adjustments to the competition and settled major disputes. As the Daytona 500 approaches, leadership and teams are hopeful these moves will restore stability and trust.

NASCAR leadership reset centers on Steve O’Donnell

Steve O’Donnell said strengthening NASCAR will take time and steady work, not quick fixes.

Speaking to The Athletic, O’Donnell said, “It starts with being a little humble about where you are as a sport, being honest with where you are as a sport, what the challenges are, but also what the opportunities are, and then, not just talking about it, but doing it.”

He added that the league is fully committed to working with partners and delivering results for fans.

Recent issues included an antitrust lawsuit involving Michael Jordan, media rights negotiations, backlash over the playoff format, and charter negotiations. The lawsuit was settled in December, and Steve Phelps resigned after inappropriate texts surfaced.

Looking ahead, O’Donnell is optimistic and sees 2026 as a chance to reset and move forward.

NASCAR playoff format returns to The Chase

NASCAR has reinstated the Chase playoff system after a year of study. The new format rewards consistent performance over single-race wins.

Some fans criticized the previous system for rewarding luck. Even former critic Mark Martin now supports the Chase change.

O’Donnell said reconnecting with fans is a priority. “Our fans feel as if they have ownership in the sport. And I think for a time, they felt a little disconnected from that kind of ownership position,” he told The Athletic.

He wants fans to feel involved while keeping NASCAR authentic.

NASCAR teams and drivers stress trust and collaboration

Repairing relationships between NASCAR and its stakeholders remains critical. Speaking to The Athletic, Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman Jeff Gordon said, “The relationship side of it that has been missing for a while and getting that back on track is important.”

Gordon also recalled earlier years when shared activities helped unite the sport. “Those were meaningful trips that you just don’t see, they don’t happen anymore,” he said, adding that O’Donnell can help rebuild those connections.

Denny Hamlin believes the strategy is moving in the right direction. “I’ve looked at the inner strategy of NASCAR of what they put out to us to get back to where we were, and I think it’s the right strategy,” Hamlin said.

Brad Keselowski noted the leadership transition following Phelps’ departure. “Steve’s big hurdle is I think he and Phelps were a pretty good combination in a lot of ways,” Keselowski said, while adding that O’Donnell now has “the keys to the castle.”

Defending champion Kyle Larson praised O’Donnell’s approach, saying, “I think he’s an outstanding leader. I feel like he runs a good balance of being friends with everybody, but also can stand his ground.”

NASCAR executive Ben Kennedy echoed that view. “If there are any ‘Yes, people’ that we have in our organization, Steve is the exact opposite of that.”

O’Donnell emphasized the importance of unity moving forward. “Not taking advantage of the opportunity we have to grow this sport would really bum me out,” he said, adding that his focus is on bringing the industry together and continuing to build the sport.
