T
he Seattle Seahawks are the new Super Bowl champions. Finishing 14-3 and earning the No. 1 seed in the NFC, the Seahawks cruised through the playoffs to earn a berth in the Super Bowl, where a 29-13 win over the New England Patriots earned the franchise their second Super Bowl title. Going through a rebuild over the last couple of years, starting with the hiring of head coach Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks are back at the top of the football mountaintop.
But for the San Francisco 49ers, the Seahawks win in the Super Bowl is the worst case scenario. Not only are the Seahawks the 49ers’ biggest rivals in the NFC West, but the Seahawks won the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium– the 49ers home stadium. A young team that could run the division for years, the Seahawks adding a championship at Levi’s Stadium is deemed a ‘nightmare scenario’ by some reporters.
The Nightmare Scenario
49ers reporter Jose Sanchez took to Twitter/X after the game and declared that the Seahawks’ Super Bowl LX title is the worst case scenario for the 49ers.
“Seahawks winning a Super Bowl in the 49ers home stadium in Year 2 of Mike MacDonald is a nightmare for the Niners,” Sanchez tweeted.
The Seahawks had the 49ers’ number this season, beating them in Week 18 in a battle for the No. 1 seed before taking them down in the NFC Divisional Round– in a 41-6 blowout loss for the 49ers. And while the Seahawks are a young team with several of their key players in the early phases of their career, such as wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, defensive back Devon Witherspoon and defensive back Nick Emmanwori, among others, the 49ers face a difficult offseason that could force them to make difficult decisions on some aging stars.
Can the 49ers Contend in 2026?
The 49ers bounced back from a tough 2024 season to finish 12-5 and return to the playoffs in ’25, but the 49ers face a long road to return to being true Super Bowl contenders in ’26. Coming off of another season where the injury bug plagued the team, the 49ers will get some of those players back, but they will be older coming off of big injuries. Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and George Kittle were the most notable 49ers to be injured this season and while Warner and Bosa should be back by training camp, Bosa is coming off of his third career ACL tear dating back to high school. Kittle, entering his age-33 season, is rehabbing a torn Achilles and could not only miss a good chunk of the season, but when he comes back, there is no telling how good he will be.
The 49ers also have several holes to fill while also needing to figure out what to do with disgruntled wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. But if the 49ers have a good offseason, there is no reason to believe that they won’t have more success in 2026.
