Latest Chiefs Prediction Suggests Eric Bieniemy Will Remain In KC Long Term

Eric Bieniemy is back with the Kansas City Chiefs as the offensive coordinator.

After holding that role from 2018-2022 with the Chiefs, Bieniemy took the offensive coordinator job with the Washington Commanders so that he could call plays, something he did not do while in Kansas City.

Bieniemy lasted just one year in Washington due to a regime change, then spent 2024 in the college ranks as UCLA’s offensive coordinator. He returned to the NFL in 2025, going back to his roots as a running backs coach for the Chicago Bears. Bieniemy’s ultimate goal for leaving Kansas City was to become a head coach, and although it didn’t work out, hope isn’t lost yet.

Eric Bieniemy predicted to have strong case to become Kansas City Chiefs head coach when Andy Reid retires

While appearing on “Fearless” with Jason Whitlock, NFL analyst Bucky Brooks said that Bieniemy’s best shot at landing a head coaching gig is with the Chiefs when Andy Reid retires.

“Whether or not Eric Bieniemy is the best play-caller or tactician, [it] doesn’t matter,” Brooks said. “His presence provides something within that locker room that was lacking in terms of accountability, discipline, and detail. Also, the elusive thing that’s gotten away from him is a head coaching job. His best opportunity to probably land a head coaching job would be from within in Kansas City because there’d be enough people that could advocate for him, I.E. (Chiefs quarterback) Patrick Mahomes. If and when Andy Reid walks away, Eric’s better served to get that job than any other.”

Bieniemy certainly has a golden opportunity with his next go around in Kansas City. The Chiefs’ offense has lacked consistency and explosiveness since Bieniemy left. During his last year with the team in 2022, the Chiefs ranked first in the NFL in total yards and points per game, and Mahomes was named NFL MVP.

Eric Bieniemy can get the Chiefs’ offense back to its roots

If Bieniemy can help get Kansas City’s offense back to elite status, it would be impossible to deny his impact and influence. The Chiefs have struggled with self-inflicted wounds such as penalties and dropped passes, which was not as prevalent the last time Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator.

Since being rehired, numerous Chiefs players have had great things to say about Bieniemy, showing that he clearly has the respect of the locker room. It is uncertain how much longer Reid plans to continue coaching, but it makes sense that Bieniemy would at least get significant consideration to take his job if he’s still with the team when Reid calls it a career.

A former nine-year NFL running back, Bieniemy is known for being a disciplinarian and a motivator. He has coached multiple big-name, 1,000-yard rushers such as Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles, Kareem Hunt, and D’Andre Swift. Under Bieniemy’s tutelage, the Bears ranked third in rushing offense last season, averaging 144.5 yards per game.

The Chiefs could certainly use that type of rushing production in their offense, as they ranked 25th in that department in 2025. Brining back the threat of a productive running game will be crucial to their improvement, and perhaps most importantly, keeping Mahomes healthy.
