The offensive skill of Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been on full display ever since he entered the NFL, having now been named to the Pro Bowl three times now in his early career.
The Lions took a calculated risk to allow Gibbs an even bigger share of the offensive touches when they traded fellow running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans as part of their many offseason moves.
And now, Gibbs will be coming into the new season with a heavily ornate new back tattoo that plays on his nickname.
Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs Unveils Elaborate New Back Tattoo
Playing into his “Sonic” nickname, Gibbs unveiled the elaborate new back tattoo similar to the one that his now-former teammate Montgomery has.
Not only does a large cross dominate the theme of the tattoo, but Gibbs also has images of himself with Georgia Tech, where he played before transferring to Alabama. He also got a black mamba in honor of the late Los Angeles Lakers icon Kobe Bryant, who sadly passed away with his young daughter and several others in a helicopter crash in early 2020.
Many X (formerly known as Twitter) users loved the new look, with one user saying, “RealRecognizesReal – Never take away what they did for the Lions and Detroit!” Another user recognized the connection between Gibbs and Montgomery, saying, “I’m going to miss them. We still got Jahmyr and I hope the best for David.”
However, not everyone is feeling the new look. One user wrote, “Getting your own picture tattooed on your body is a new level of narcissism!” in response. Another user said, “Gibbs got himself tatted on himself 3 different times lmao i’ve never seen that can’t lie.”
This person didn’t understand why he’d feature several images of himself on his own back, asking, “People who tattoo their own name and photos of themselves are very odd , like why?”
Known as “Knuckles”, Montgomery was traded Texans for a fourth-round and seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL draft and veteran offensive lineman Juice Scruggs.
So far through his first three NFL seasons, Gibbs has accumulated impressive numbers, racking up 3,580 yards with 39 touchdowns. Additionally, he owns 5,029 total scrimmage yards and 49 total touchdowns to his name, the latter number of which happen to be the highest total for any NFL player in his first three seasons.
The Lions have yet to pick up the third-year option on his contract.
Jahmyr Gibbs Still Believes The Lions’ Super Bowl Window Is Open
Despite finishing 9-8 and losing their reign atop the NFC North Division to the Chicago Bears this past season, Gibbs believes that the Lions are still in good position to make good on their Super Bowl dreams.
“We’ve still got a lot of great players on the team and a lot of great coaches, so we’ll get back right,” said Gibbs following their season finale against the Chicago Bears. “We just had a couple of mishaps here and there throughout the season and little bumps, but we’ll be fine.”
