The Toronto Raptors begin their 2026 NBA playoff run Saturday afternoon with a difficult road test against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of their first-round series. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Rocket Arena, where Toronto opens the postseason as the No. 5 seed against the No. 4 Cavaliers.
Toronto enters the matchup dealing with a significant backcourt setback after point guard Immanuel Quickley was ruled out. His absence removes one of the team’s top scorers and primary ballhandlers at the start of a critical playoff series.
That injury news led directly to a lineup adjustment, with Toronto confirming a new starting five ahead of tipoff. The Raptors will now lean more heavily on Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, and Brandon Ingram to carry offensive creation against one of the Eastern Conference’s top defensive teams.

Toronto announced that Jamal Shead, RJ Barrett, Brandon Ingram, Scottie Barnes, and Jakob Poeltl will start Saturday’s Game 1 against Cleveland.
The move comes after Quickley was ruled out because of a right hamstring strain suffered in the regular-season finale against the Brooklyn Nets. Quickley played 17 first-half minutes in that game before not returning.
Shead now steps into a larger role immediately in his playoff debut. The rookie guard is expected to handle lead guard responsibilities while also taking on difficult defensive assignments in the backcourt.
The starting group gives Toronto added size and versatility. Barrett and Ingram provide wing scoring, Barnes can function as a secondary initiator, and Poeltl remains the interior anchor.
Quickley’s absence is especially notable because of what he brought throughout the season. In 70 games, he averaged 16.4 points and 5.9 assists while shooting 37.4 percent from three-point range. He also made a team-high 2.5 threes per game.
Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged Quickley’s impact before the series opener.
“The shooting piece, the speed: The guy’s a heck of a player,” Atkinson said(Via The Athletic). “I’m sure Darko (Rajakovic) would agree with this: He’s a big reason they captured the fifth seed.”
Without him, Toronto must replace both perimeter shooting and tempo control against a Cleveland team led by Donovan Mitchell.
Scottie Barnes and Jamal Shead Key For Toronto Raptors
With Quickley sidelined, more offensive responsibility now shifts to Barnes. Toronto already saw that adjustment late in the regular season when Quickley previously missed time.
During Quickley’s recent eight-game absence because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot, Barnes expanded his playmaking role and averaged 10.6 assists per game. That marked a sharp rise from his 5.9 season average.
Toronto will likely need similar production again on Saturday.
Barnes’ ability to create in transition, operate in half-court sets, and defend multiple positions makes him central to Toronto’s Game 1 plan. His matchup versatility could also help the Raptors respond to Cleveland’s size and guard play.
Shead’s composure will be another major factor. While Toronto has used different reserve combinations during Quickley’s absences, handing the rookie a starting playoff assignment signals confidence from head coach Darko Rajakovic.
Quickley spoke Friday about trying to return despite being limited physically late in the season.
“I just want to play, not even for myself, (but) for my teammates,” Quickley said. “I know how much this means to our team, to our group, (I was) just trying to be out there for my guys.”
Rajakovic added a brief update on the guard’s progress.
“He’s improving,” Rajakovic said. “Every day, he’s getting better.”
For Toronto, the challenge is immediate. Cleveland owns home-court advantage and one of the deepest rosters in the East. The Raptors now enter the series opener with a reworked backcourt and increased pressure on their young core.
Still, the lineup announcement shows Toronto’s direction clearly: trust its size, place creation duties on Barnes, and ask Shead to steady the offense in a high-stakes playoff environment.
