Kyle Larson knows exactly what it takes to win at Kansas Speedway — and why it’s never as straightforward as it looks.
Despite being one of the most successful drivers at the 1.5-mile track in recent years, Larson made it clear during Saturday’s media availability that Kansas presents a unique set of challenges that can quickly catch drivers off guard.
Larson’s recent Kansas results back it up — including a dominant 221-lap win in 2025 and multiple victories at the track over the past several seasons. But even with that track record, he says two factors stand above the rest.

According to Larson, one of the biggest variables at Kansas isn’t something teams can control.
“The wind definitely has an effect on your car and it’s not like a consistent direction every time we come here,” Larson said during Saturday’s press conference from the track. “Even from Saturdays to Sundays sometimes it changes.”
That inconsistency can dramatically impact how the car handles, especially at a track where small balance shifts can make a major difference over the course of a run.
For drivers, it means constant adjustment — and very little room to get comfortable.
High-Risk Racing Near the Wall Raises the Stakes
The second major challenge Larson pointed to is the level of commitment required, particularly in the preferred racing groove.
“Your level of commitment is very high here,” Larson said. “You’re running right next to the wall in (Turns) 1 and 2 and kind of managing the risk there is important.”
Kansas has become known for its high line, where drivers push their cars to the limit just inches from the wall. It’s a style Larson has excelled in, but one mistake can end a strong run instantly.
Balancing aggression with control is critical — especially as speeds build over longer runs.

Larson’s confidence — and caution — both come from experience.
Over the past several seasons, the Hendrick Motorsports driver has consistently been one of the fastest cars at Kansas, combining race-winning speed with the ability to run multiple grooves. His 2025 victory, where he led 221 laps, stands as one of the most dominant performances at the track in recent memory.
He’s also shown the ability to rebound from adversity at Kansas. Even in races where results didn’t go his way, Larson has often run near the front, highlighting just how strong his baseline speed is at this track.
