Jared Turner is an award-winning journalist who has covered NASCAR professionally for more than 20 years. A NASCAR contributor at Heavy Sports since April 2026, Jared brings meaningful experience to the role. Since starting out as a reporter for one of Virginia’s largest newspapers, The Roanoke Times where he worked the local short-track scene along with the occasional high school and college basketball game, Jared has held full-time or freelance writing roles for FOX Sports, NASCAR.com, SPEED Channel, Sporting News, NASCAR Scene Magazine, NASCAR Pole Position Magazine, Frontstretch.com, The Greensboro News & Record, Sportscasting.com and the Daily Downforce.
He has provided on-site coverage for three Daytona 500s, been a featured guest on Sirius XM Radio and iHeartRadio, and been published in more than 50 NASCAR souvenir programs that include several Daytona 500 keepsakes.
Education
Jared double majored in Communication and Psychology at Virginia Tech, graduating magna cum laude. During his time at the Blacksburg, Virginia campus, he was permanently enshrined in Phi Beta Kappa — the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society. He also wrote for the student newspaper and joined The Roanoke Times as a freelance correspondent, laying the groundwork for his first “real” job, which he began a month prior to graduation.
